Welcome to the IKE Wiki. Your destination for information about the Illinois Kite Enthusiasts, festivals and club flys. But beyond that, we hope that over time this will become a comprehensive reference for all things related to kiting.

What exactly is a "wiki?"

Ah yes, first things first. A Wiki is a type of website, or specifically the software. It allows for easy collection, organization and linking of information. Another primary feature is that wikis are collaborative in nature. It allows for many people to contribute, add, and improve upon the information on the website. It works well as an online database, reference, encyclopedia, and more. Here is a short video from Common Craft that explains the concept of the wiki in general...

Probably the most well known wiki on the Internet is the Wikipedia. This is an online, free encyclopedia that has been created by the public at large. In fact, to read more on wikis, their article is a good place to go.

There are currently wikis dedicated to almost any topic you can think of. In addition to the Wikipedia, there is the Wiktionary which is a dictionary version, the Baseball Reference, the Psychology Wiki, the Familypedia for genealogy, the Muppet Wiki, for yes...muppet information. There's an Elvispedia, the Lostpedia for fans of the TV show, Lost. MyElectrical is a reference for electrical engineers, and where would you go for anything related to the world of Star Wars? The Wookiepedia, of course.

A Wiki for kites

There are thousands of wikis out there, on every imaginable subject...except that kites is not one of them it seems. Now, the Wikipedia itself has an article on kites, but it is far from complete. It seems there is a void to be filled, and we hope to be able to do that.

Our wiki, the IKE Kite Wiki, is intended to serve two functions.

  1. It is a place where we will collect club information in an easy to find and access manner. It will contain our festival schedules, club fly information, locations and directions. After festivals or other gatherings have occurred, we will be able to easily collect post-event notes, photos, videos, links...again, all in an orderly and consistent fashion that should prove easy and convenient to access.
  2. We will build up a body of reference material about all aspects of kiting. We would like to have articles on anything and everything...kite types, hardware, definitions, tutorials, instructions, plans, links to find information across the web. Anything that goes in can be found easily through the site's search feature. We would love to become a highly regarded authority and destination for anyone on the Internet looking for information about our beloved hobby.
