connectors

Postby Chris » Sat, Nov 04 2006, 05:20 PM

what is a good starting package of miscellaneous connectors and end caps to begin with. Nothing really kite specific, just kind of like a sample package of sorts. I know Denny picked up a fair amount of stuff recently.
It's a great satisfaction knowing that for a brief point in time you made a difference.

Denny bought all that stuff a year or so ago so he could be a kite hospital at the Perry Farm's festival. What a nice guy. He bought the most common sport kite spars and connectors.

For personal use, I don't there really is a standard set. It depends on what you are going to build or what you already have.
For making SLKs there are lot of different rods that are being used and the endcaps and connectors have to match the rods.

As for Rev spare parts, the thing that happens on Revs sometimes is the bungee breaks or comes out of the sail. I haven't ever lost the endcap doing that, just the little washer from the back. But to be safe, for a Rev spare part kite, I would carry a couple Rev brand endcaps or check out the alternatives:
fitting to hide the knot (from Kitebuilder.com)
YSP54--same as rev from Hang-em High

Add some bungee from either of the above or from a local Army Surplus or camping store.

And the washers. Rev has used many different kinds of washers over the years. For quite a while they used faucet washers.
I buy mine at Lowes. They are size #0, and come in a pack of 10 for 99 cents.

Where can I buy the leading edge like the one used on the Vented REVOS.
You know,...the real strong ones. for the leading edge. (attack) I need a couple of sets.

I almost forgot, do you know the size?

I have spare rods for all my Revs, some spare bridal line, end caps, washers and a whole lot of 1/8" & 3/32" bungee...

I also have 10 of the PEKR caps that Mike referenced) that I was going to use on one of my Revs... just haven't gotten around to it yet.

If you are thinking of the wide tube, I don't know of any place to get a bargain. Nothing beats the actual Revolution tube in this case.
It's usually called the SLE spar and it comes in two strengths. The kind that come in the vented (4 wrap) are heavier and stronger than the ones in the SLE (3 wrap).
I don't usually feel the need for that strength unless I'm flying in 20mph or more.

The best way to get a set would be to contact Chicago Kite, see the link at the top of this page.
If you want the strongest tube, tell him you want the 4 wrap SLE for a 1.5.

They're really expensive though. You might be better off saving up for a real Revolution. That would give you spars and a kite to use as a model for your experiments. Rather than have several sets of spars, you could just move one set of spars from kite to kite since you can only fly one kite at a time. :-D

Thank you again Mike!
did you noticed how much RED "IKE" BARON was bending? I need to make it strong, so that when you guys come to California, it will be a good looking and flyable kite. Actually I made some changes allready, and due to the lack of Mylar it wont be completly finished untill Jan. We'll see what happen. Hopefully I will start working at the end of DEC. or begining of JAN.

Good luck on the job, Hector.

What spars are in IKE Baron right now? And how long are they? The rev spars are a little shorter than standard, they are 31" long.
