I will be at the airshow Saturday, but still undecided about Sunday.
It's a great satisfaction knowing that for a brief point in time you made a difference.

If we have the get-together in October... maybe we should have a Halloween oriented thing. ?

Re: IKE Family Picnic
i had a feeling that Ken would like that idea!
Changing one's appearance around October may not be a bad thing at all... we humans are, i think, as a whole, a rather ugly lot (we actually look a lot like naked baby mice) and i bet that other creatures (when they look at us objectively) must really be rather disappointed with what they see! Cephalopods, like cuttlefish squid, for example, can change their brilliant/colorful pigmentation instantly... and use their splendid pigmentation to communicate.

Sure, those Cephalopods seem all cute and cuddly until.....
From the news:
"Ferocious, pack-feeding jumbo squid have invaded waters off California's central coast and are devouring local fish populations."
and here
" A mysterious sea creature, up to 7 feet long, weighing up to 100 pounds. It hunts in packs of hundreds, flying through the water at 25 mph, changing color. With a parrot-like beak and arms covered with thousands of sharp barbs, it attacks and tries to eat nearly anything it sees, including fish, scuba divers, even its own kind. "

Hector, be careful when flying your Rev near the ocean.... just when you thought it was safe to fly your kite in the water...

Re: IKE Family Picnic
*****"For reasons that still aren't entirely clear, large numbers of the scrappy cephalopods have been steadily expanding their range north, first off San Diego and Los Angeles, where hundreds have washed up on beaches in recent years.
Now they appear to have taken up residence in Monterey Bay, according to a study released Monday by researchers from Stanford University and the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) compiled with more than 16 years of underwater video.
"These are aggressive, pugnacious bullies," said Bruce Robison, senior scientist at MBARI, based in Moss Landing. "They are a sight to behold."

According to some prominent scientists, cephalopods as either octopus or squid will one day (in the distant future) fill in the niche left by humans after we have gone extinct. Undoubtedly, society will continue to exist with high levels of violence and callous aggression manifesting!... (except, of course, for a few intelligent pacifist/vegetarian forms)!

Their server must have taken too big a hit. I linked to a different site. Should be able to see it now.
Roxy, don't worry. We've only ever seen one and it's only an inch long.
Promachoteuthis sulcus is known from a single, small (25 mm ML, sex unknown) but distinctive individual from great depths in the south Atlantic Ocean.

Re: IKE Family Picnic
Grippingly awesome!
They actually, like birds, have beaks... much superior to teeth. None of my parrots require dental work. We humans evolved with some rather crappy hardware (so far anyway).

We haven't had a cephalopod post in a while. Skip past the bio-luminescence if you want to see the shape changing, color changing wonders of the squiddy world.

Re: IKE Family Picnic
Lately there have been some specials on television about various cephalopod kite-like-soaring squid. Humbolt squid have attained a reputation for being very violent and man-eating. Scientists have found, however, that this occurs only in or near the fishing grounds where they are caught and tortured. They are more benevolent and benign in open water areas and never attack man in open (fishing-free) areas. They use muscle-bound chromatophores to change their skin colors and to communicate. We dull human beings are mono-colored and are rather ugly (well... except for a few of us... like Robin Mead -- the morning CNN news talk host).
