Internet Impaired
Internet Impaired
If this doesn't deserve a great big WTF, I don't know what does...
My ISP shut off service yesterday without warning. They are having business problems, and may or may not come back at all.
Needless to say, this really sucks because of how much we've come to depend on being connected. My wife communicates with her clients via email, for one thing.
I can still get around via my phone, but it's more difficult, and there's lots of things I can't do.
What a pain.

Jeff... been there, done that... had it done to me 4 times back in the days...
I fought with SBS for several years over DSL back in 2000 because of distance limitations (I was about 100 feet over their distance limitations at the time)... amazingly enough, I was able to get a 3rd party to provision the line and had great speed... then they went out of business...then got Covad and they cut me off for no good reason... also had service eliminated 2 times at the office because of people going out of business..
I've gone the route from a phone line to satellite (directPC... a bunch of f'n jerks), to phone line to DSL to nothing to DSL back to nothing then then phone line again... finally just said, the hell with it and got comcast... been there ever since and the service is actually pretty good.

Re: Internet Impaired
Actually, I wouldn't even mind Comcast too much at this point, depending on the price. Thing is, we don't even have a cable line coming into the house. Who knows how long that would take to get installed.
Re: Internet Impaired
I feel your pain.
Re: Internet Impaired
You definitely get what you pay for with cable. Comcast is one of the best in this part of the states. I have to have a quick connection for my business so it's always a priority for me to get a good provider wherever i move. Very happy with Comcast, it may seem a bit pricey to some, but if you have to have reliable fast service it's the only way to go.
I have yet to have service blackout since I've been with them, and the speeds are phenomenal... This a quick test result from the computer in my basement routed through a wireless 54 B! that's on the second floor
The speeds are more than double on my wired connection upstairs and the latency is around 20ms

Re: Internet Impaired
Hey babb, looks like you have some hardware/software issues slowing your upload speed. Thats abnormally low, it will really slow things down.

Re: Internet Impaired
I just have comcast home... upload speed is no better than 384K... so I'm getting what I pay for.

I've connected my cellphone to the PC, and am using it as a modem. Can't do it too often, I think if you push too much data, they get a little suspicious.
I'm getting about 250 - 300K with the cellphone.

Re: Internet Impaired
Would you guys recomend buying that software? I am fairly good with my speed, or so I think, it's at 54 mbps, and according to the test, my computer is slow.

Re: Internet Impaired
Buying software will not really change anything.
Most of us have a cable modem connection to the internet. If you are using dial-up, it will be slower than what we are doing.

Jeez, that's pretty amazingly fast though. Fern, nor my kids, get that through their schools.
Paul, are you gonna make it out to Pontiac this weekend? It'd be great to see you there.

My internet impairment appears to be over.
Finally got DSL installed. Not as fast as some of you guys, but I'll take it!
