Question On Carbon Rods And Sizes

Postby Jeff » Sun, Mar 18 2007, 01:53 PM

I have a kite that is constructed from 6mm carbon rods. (Acrobatx)

Late last year, I broke a lower spreader, and I need to get a replacement. So my question is twofold, actually.

1.) Sizing. I am looking online at parts to order, and I see that the rods are sized in English units, not metric. My rods have an outside diameter of 6mm, and inside diameter of 4mm. That translates to .236 inches and .157 inches. I assumed that this would be some sort of standard size, but looking at parts lists, I see them sized at either .228â€

Check with Dave at Chicago Kite. He has a wide variety of spars..

Hobby shops don't normally carry them.
You could try calling Chicago Kite (708) 848-4907 (see the link at the top of the page) to see if he has any around.
Take your kite in and see if it fits. Probably either a .2300 or .2400 size would work ok.
But I'm not a dual-line guy, so take my advice with a grain of salt.

I wish I could, but it's an hour one-way without traffic.

I guess I can call though...I'm a lazy shopper. If it's not on the web page, I tend to go where I do see the item listed.

Fair enough, I wish Dave had more on his web page, but you often need to call.

Things like rods and such would be difficult to get up on a web page... with all the different sizes and lengths and such... give Dave a call and if he has it, he could fedex it and you would have it the next day...

The Acrobatx lower spreaders are 5.85mm rods (6 mm works fine). The length is 25 3/4" or 654 mm.

We have replaced the standard lower spreaders with Avia Sport .230 rods with no problems at all.

Most rods are sold in a standard 32.5" length. You can get 40" & 48" lengths as well for special applications. Unfortunately you can't get two lower spreaders from one 48" rod so I suggest purchasing two 32.5 rods.

We have the rods in stock and the price is $8.25 each. These are fairly common rods so you should be able to get them from any reputable kite shop, I am sure that Dave has them for you.
Happy Winds!
