Maps
Re: Maps
My preference would be to use google earth with a ikeclub.kmz or personal .kmz file that we could keep on the forum and update as neccessary... what I like the most about this is that simply downloading the file and opening it in google earth will provide a satellite reference to all of our flying spots.
The easiest way to compile something like this is for everyone to run google earth and add placemarks for their favorite flying fields. If you make a new folder under the places section of GE and then add placemarks, they will all be placed in that folder. Then, you can save the .kzm file and attach it to a post as I will demonstrate below...
The other option with Google Earth is to use the community places forum. But, with that, we get everyone elses interests and posts showing up which would make this rather cluttered..
Let me know what you think.. I know not everyone has Google Earth but it's really a rather good and interesting program.

Re: Maps
The problem I see with google earth is twofold:
1. it requires a high speed internet connection. Some of our key members, our favorite members, don't have this.
2. it's not good at driving direction type maps.
It is a lot of fun though and I highly recommend it to anyone with broadband who hasn't played with it.

works for me... I didn't even realize they had that up and working...

Re: Maps
Microsoft's map, from Mike, took about 2 or 3 minutes to download with my dinosaurian system. i can also download Google maps, like the one that Mike provided for the Jan. 27th Fly. i was unable to open Babbman's file for some reason... no Google Earth software or whatever...
i'll give you guys a map to my mother-in-law's place --- she'll be glad to tell you to go fly a kite!

Re: Maps
Works fine if I could only figure out how to add my spots to it!! Loading time is no worse then any other map systems. I did not both trying the one Babbman talked about. I figured with dial up and comments made it would not be worth the time.

Re: Maps
i tried adding a field (Limestone Park) to the Microsoft site, and i saw that Ken did something similar. Ours, however, are not showing up on the left, with the other 3 spots and i'm not even sure how to retrieve them. i did manage to get them all to show with the Scratchpad or something like that... but i'm not sure how i did it. The thing works kind of squirrelly and is difficult to operate for me.

Re: Maps
You guys seem to be doing ok with the maps. Here's a couple tips.
go to
http://maps.live.com/
Click on "sign-in" in the upper right corner
Sign in with this:
If you don't see the "scratch pad window on the right side of the map, click on "Collections" and "open" right above the map.
In the scratch pad windwow, click on the down arrow just below the word "scratch pad" to select a "collection". A collection is like a folder and where you save your fields.
Choose the "Kite Flying Fields" collection. This will keep all the locations in the same collection.
You can click on the name of a field to move the map to it.
You can hover your mouse over the number of field (either in the scratch pad or in the map) and a menu of choices will come up.
At the bottom of the scratch pad are some icons, hover over them for explanations of what they do. For example, click on the push pin to add a new pushpin.
That should get y'all started.
