Babbman - Cathrine's Wheel II & III
Babbman - Cathrine's Wheel II & III
Well, I wouldn't want anyone to think I was slacking off here...
I started working on 2 more Catherine's Wheels on Saturday... this time I doing a 36 and 48 cell wheel.... the 36 will spin right and the 48 left... the previous 24 cell I made spins left. I'm going to stick these inside of each other... I've been e-mailing with Gary Engvall on how he does his...
Man, what a lot of cutting and sewing on this...
[albumimg]405[/albumimg]
here's all the pieces cut and ready to assemble. Took me all day Saturday to do all the cutting. And of course, I ran out of my good white ripstop and had to use some crappy white... This was all cold cut...
[albumimg]417[/albumimg][albumimg]418[/albumimg]
Tabs, tabs and more tabs... tedious and repetitious but not difficult
[albumimg]419[/albumimg]
Inner and outer rings sewn up and ready to join. All of the risers are joined to the inner rings... these are MUCH bigger than the 24 cell
[albumimg]420[/albumimg][albumimg]421[/albumimg]
Just some closeups of the sewing
[albumimg]422[/albumimg]
Everything set for tomorrow's sewing marathon...
I cut a lot of corners this time... I didn't draw many guidelines for sewing the risers like I did on the 24 cell... I just used my presser foot to keep everything straight. I also didn't use any seam tape on any of the seams or risers.... just a small piece on the tabs to keep them in place while sewing...
So far, I spent all day Saturday cutting and making up the tabs, Sunday sewing the tabs on and a few risers and most of tonight sewing all the risers in place. Went through almost 150 yards of white nylon thread and 3 bobbins...
Tomorrow I'll do the outer ring and probably cut the bridles....
Wed, I have to learn how to splice the bridle and then learn how to do a quoit... which is basically a knotless loop... Gary suggests not having any knots for the bridles to catch on each other as the rings inflate and deflate with the wind...
So much to learn... and so little time...
I sure hope they look cool.... especially after all this work!

Re: Babbman - Cathrine's Wheel II & III
OK, I scrounged up some bridle line and finished off Wheel II, this is the 36 cell wheel... I'm tired of tying knots.... 36 tie ins 1st tier = 18 6' lines. Second tier 9 6' lines...
The pictures suck but it's the best I can do at 10pm with choppy winds in my neighborhood.. excuse my arm...
[albumimg]429[/albumimg][albumimg]430[/albumimg]
next wheel to be bridled up tomorrow night... 48-12-6-3... that's a lot of knots to tie up...
My goal is to get all 3 wheels out on Sunday and lofted by my sled or flowform...
Also working on a sled for Elie!... I let her pick the colors tonight also... pink and blue... she wanted purple in there also but... no... sorry... 2 colors only...
Chris, I need to know how you did that fuzzy tail...

Re: Babbman - Cathrine's Wheel II & III
It's too easy!!! Take a strip of ripstop at least two inches wide, mark center the length of the piece, and just zigzag a piece of line down the length of material. Be sure the line overhangs both ends by a few inches. Cut slits on both sides of the line just shy of the stitching every 1/2 inch or so and take the whole thing and ball it up and smash it real good in your hands; and voila!!! A fuzzy tail.

It's a great satisfaction knowing that for a brief point in time you made a difference.

Re: Babbman - Cathrine's Wheel II & III
FYI, I completed the 48 cell on Saturday... of course, we have had no wind so I haven't been able to test it yet... I probably won't have time to put them all together inside of themselves before Saturday but I'll have them with me anyway... I need to string all 3 of them up in the wind and see how they act.... stupid tests of me holding them in the choppy wind in front of my house is no real test at all..
I'll post a picture if I get the chance to test it before then...
I also have another project in the works that I started yesterday... I'll surprise you all on Saturday... all I can say is that when I'm done, I will have hemmed 260 feet of ripstop.... I should be good at it by the time I'm done

Here she is... turning left as I intended...
[albumimg]452[/albumimg]
Can't see the bridle lines too well but it goes 48-12-6-3-1
Here's all the lines before I bridled it..
