Kite Retreat 2014, Sept 27-28

Postby Mike » Mon, Jul 21 2014, 03:21 PM

Kite Retreat, Sept 27-28
Indiana Dunes

Here's the hotel info:
We will be staying at the Best Western Indian Oaks.
http://bestwesternindiana.com/hotels/be ... indian-oak

To get the following rates you must call (219) 926-2200 or toll free 800-552- 4232.
Tell them you are calling for the group rate for "IKE Day" (I didn't come up with that name)

edit:***I just noticed that my receipt said "Kite flying day" instead of "IKE Day", which was last years code words. So if they can't find "IKE", try "Kite", or even my last name (Kory). Sorry for any confusion.

The date for the room is:
Saturday Sept 27, 2014
and the rates are:
Std. 2 Doubles Non Smk : $89.99
Lakeview King Non Smk : $99.99
Lakeview 2 Queens Non Smk : $109.99

You have to book soon. You have to book by August 27
The rate is refundable, so there is no reason not to call right now for the best rates!
To cancel the rooms, give 48 hours notice (a couple days before the retreat).

So what is this all about? Besides the obvious.

Hard to get a lot of people schedules coordinated so it's just turned out that we pick a weekend and people show up to fly. Usually when it won't be so crowded. Flying Sat and Sun. Some people stay overnight.

Just in case anyone is interested, the campground still has openings. It's only about a five minut walk down to the beach. I got lot 24 for me and the wife. Sure would enjoy some fellow kiters if anyone camps. Looking forward to it.

Bill, the IKE Retreat is something we do once a year for the club to get together and fly on the beach for a weekend. No festival or anything, just us having fun. The Dunes are a great place to fly, and, as TMadz said, it won't be very crowded in late September so we have lots of space.

Bill, ya gotta come. The people are a blast to hang out with and extremely generous with kites and advice. It's where I learned to fly the Rev!

I'm working on getting a block of rooms at the Best Western Indian Oak where we stayed at last year. I'll give you details when I get it confirmed.

Saturday night dinner will be at Tao Chen's Chinese restaurant with the super nice owners/workers. Service and food were great and the owner even came out on Sunday to play with us!

It's highly recommended to do both days if you can. Having dinner and hanging out at the hotel is a great way to meet folks and learn even more.

Dinner was great and great fun last year. IIRC the waitress even learned most of our names. I agree with Mike about coming both days and I'm going to try for that this year. If you can only come one day, try to make the Saturday night dinner. Mike, are you going to warn Tao Chen that we're coming and give them a chance to get outta town? Of all the "fun flies" I attend each year, the IKE retreat is my favorite. And that's saying something, because kite people are generally great anywhere you go.

About what time of day(s) does this generally kick off? Weather permitting, of course.

I'm seriously considering it. I'd like a full immersion kite flying day or two.

Sun up to sun down I believe. Some people are camping there. Some are staying in a hotel. Sunday morning will be earlier because of people staying.

I'm going Sunday so I'll be leaving before dawn to travel and catch up on the hour I lose. For a full day of flying, it's worth it.

Don't forget. There is a $10 out of state lic plate fee. $5 for IN plates. Also, pack food if you need it.

For the past two years, I've only attended on Saturday. IIRC people had stuff in the air by 10 a.m., perhaps a bit earlier. We wrapped up around supper time and then ate together in town ("Side slide the water pitcher my way, please." "You want that an inverted side slide?" "Uh, no."). I always departed after supper, so I don't know what happens afterwards.

Oh yes.....soooo in!!!

Not sure if we are camping yet or hotel. Wife likes the pool idea for the kids.

I am up for camping! I may do BOTH :)

Bill, it is an absolute MUST, but only if you like great people, a great time and kites!

This is set on the same day the Antioch fest is scheduled, and ChicagoKite has IKE listed as "will be in attendance"...uh, awkward?

Not really -- David from Chicago Kite (aka Kite Harbor) is a member of IKE and will be representing Chicago Kite at the Antioch festival as he has been in past years. We also have members in many other States and Countries of the world. Those who can make it to the retreat will be flying there. Those who can't will be flying elsewhere. All-in-all, those flying anywhere will be flying together in spirit.
