N.Y.M. Flutter

Postby swannie » Wed, Jun 11 2014, 08:26 PM

Hey guys,

Anyone have any amount of time on any of the NYM kites yet? I flew mine a bit over the weekend and the trailing edge fluttered quite a bit. I tried to tighten the bottom bungies a bit but it didn't seem to help. I don't have flutter problems with any of my other kites, but if/when I do it can usually be solved with more brake, but I couldn't tune it out of this one.

Anyone else noticed this?

Brian

Tighten the leading edge bungees also, that will pull the bottoms of the upright spars outward and tighten the trailing edge.

I'll try that one too - I don't think I've ever adjusted those on a 1.5. :)

I've flown NYMs and haven't had that trouble. You're right in that is usually solved by more brake.
If you can't get it to work, talk to Big Mike when he comes back from Canada.

Well, if you don't like it, I could see what I have to trade . . .

I've talked to Big Mike...it didn't stop the flutter.

On my custom it flutters like a butterfly on all my spars except the 3 wraps. So I fly with 3 wraps.
Everything seems so much better when the sky is filled with beautiful colors.

Just saw this post. I have the same problem with my NYM. I have tried tightening the different combinations of the leading, and trailing edges, but the flutter still remains.
And, the flutter can be quite noisy.

Do you have any other Revs?

I'll be heading up to to Madison this Thursday and it's possible that I could stop in Janesville to give your kite a quick test if you're available in the early afternoon.

Thanks for the tip! I tried a 3 wrap in 8-10 mph and almost no flutter. Big difference. Don't know how the 3 wrap will work in light winds though.

I do not have a NYM, but I fly with 3 wraps all the time in my revs, even in 3mph.
It's all in the technique.

What rods were in it with the flutter? Green?

interesting...
compare the lengths of the rods that fluttered with the 3 wraps. Are the flutterers shorter?

Yes, it came with the green race rods.

Just checked. Green race rods are the same length as 3 wraps.

I also have a custom 1.5 mid vent. Mark (makatakam) adjusted it to remove some flutter, and it's fine.
Yes, I'll be available early afternoon on Thursday, if it's no bother. I'd appreciate it. I fly about 1 mile from the interstate.

HI Rudy,
I have to reschedule. I can stop on the way back. That would be early Sunday afternoon.
If that works for you, PM me your phone # and the location of the park.

It was the bend in the fame that gave me the flutter. The stiffer 3 wrap removed the flutter almost completely. Glad it helped.
