Mike -

You are definitely nuts. Those pictures are cool, pun intended. Congrats on the flight. So did you set up everything inside and walk out or do all the setting up outside? I must admit I stayed in the whole day didn't even venture out the get the mail. I figured the mail would still be there on a warmer day.

Chris and I joined this club 2 years ago when we put up his newly created arch at the beginning of Feb when it read -1 on the thermometer.

It was so cold that we bent his spikes and the tails actually froze and broke off in our hands.

I only did it because I couldn't let him be the only idiot out there...lol

That was the last time that I will be flying in anything below freezing... I'm too old for that crap. And honestly, it's no fun... I'll just wait until spring...

Impressive. Jeepster just referenced this thread a few days ago . . . . so who's going flying tomorrow? I believe the wind chills here are going to be down around -45F tomorrow morning (-18F with 20mph wind, gusts to 31). Vented kite weather.

I'm worried the vents will clog up with snow.

Nah, don't want to risk clogging the vents...

Can I join the club now? Big Mike certainly has me beat on on air temp and his fashion sense . . . . hard to see in the phone app, but the wind chill was -44F . . . . and my wife refused to take a picture of me with no coat . . . .

8-) I was out there about 20-25 minutes, and wanted to keep flying, but the wife said I had to pack up so we could pick up our daughter (and she refused to leave me alone at the field). I was actually quite warm through layering.

Yup, Steve, you're a member of the club. But Big Mike is still the president.

Oh good, 'cause I don't want all the responsibility that comes with a job like that! Not to mention the papparazzi!

I was outside shoveling the driveway yesterday and I was going to go fly in the park afterwards. I was going to try and take a picture myself since my wife called me some choice names gave me some sage advice and refused to help me. It was then I remembered Groucho Marx's immortal words...

That's funny. As you can see from the pictures, my wife stayed in the car. However, she was NOT very helpful when I suggested I needed a picture with just my IKE shirt on my back and no coat. . . . my wife had the same reaction, and she DID call me some choice words . . . . and that's when my flying time ended for the day.

C'mon, join the club. It has to be a good club with Big Mike as president for life!

It wasn't the temperature actually, it was the snow devils I could see swirling across the field. Flying would have been easy, but once I thought about the time and tangled mess of lines in negative temps, I lost all desire.

I agree with TMadz... it's not the flying I'm worried about, it's making a tangled mess of my lines that I want to avoid. :)

I didn't have any problems with the lines. I just took a little extra time when setting out and winding up. I put the lines on the kite and the handles before leaving the house, so all I had to do was unwind in the field, and I was ready to fly. The coldest part was getting the lines off the kite when I was leaving, although I probably could have wound up the lines from the handle end without taking the handles off the line set. Detaching the lines required taking my hands out of the mittens for a few minutes to get the lark's head knots undone. I planned ahead though and had a second pair of warm gloves in the car for winding the lines up.

Practically a heat wave today - the outdoor thermometer at the house is showing 7F.

Yeah. I could have set everything up and just walked across the street, but at that point, meh. Cold is cold. I did get a new toy I've been longing for though to console myself.
