Indiana Dunes Quick Fly! Sat 7/12

Postby Darkspark » Fri, Jul 12 2013, 10:09 PM

Shari and I are tentatively planning on heading up to the dunes to fly tomorrow afternoon. We usually go in the afternoon, wait for the heat of the day and the swimmers and general beach folk to clear out. Swimming is allowed till 5 or so. After that the place empties. then we fly till sunset. Which is always lovely there. Forecast is for east winds, which is a little unusual. I will post for sure tomorrow, but it looks like it is going to be a great summer day!

Any chance of changing to Sunday? My daughter has a softball game tomorrow afternoon (Saturday) that I can't miss, plus I have to get the lawn mowed, bushes trimmed up, and other general honey-do items done. I can probably join you if you go on Sunday (during the day / into late afternoon).

Sorry Steve, Saturday is the day. I have been bugging Mikey since I found out that Michigan City was canceled. Flying kites, watching the sunset, maybe a little shopping. He promised and I am going to hold him to it.
Everything seems so much better when the sky is filled with beautiful colors.

Which Dunes are you guys going to? I am off on Sunday and thought about possibly going to the Dunes for some big kite flying. Wish I would have read this post earlier, would come up this afternoon.

I won't be going to the dunes on Sunday. I'll probably stay closer to home . . . haven't decided where yet. Possibly the top of the hill at Greene Valley (haven't been there for a very long time) . . . . but that's not a good location for power kites. Are you talking power kites or big SLKs?

SLK and duals. Probably end up at West Beach or State Park Dunes in the afternoon.

Was wondering if anyone flys at Cricket Hill up on the north side. Flew there years ago and the wind is shown to be coming off the lake all day. Might be good flying there.

Was awesome afternoon of flying. Wind of the water at 6 or 7mph. Silky. Sorry I didn't respond earlier. Signal at the beach is not data quality. We always go to the Dunes state park. Straight down 49. So everyone knows, swimming is closed at 6. The beach is pretty packed till then. But after 6 it slowly emptied. And the sunset is over the lake and usually beautiful.

Alright, headed up to dunes this afternoon for some flying. I will be there about 4, pretty much taking everything from high wind to no wind with me. Hate it when you show up with heavy air kites and there is no wind so I am planning accordingly. Something WILL fly to day, even if it means flinging my kite bag across the beach!
