Club Fly - Saturday 10/27/2012

Postby goestoeleven » Tue, Oct 23 2012, 12:41 PM

Anybody interested in a club fly on Saturday? The weather looks cold w/ possible showers, with wind out of the north, so it's not the best. I will be flying someplace downtown (either Northerly or Montrose) on Saturday afternoon. After 2 pm works for group flying. Before that I will be practicing routines, hopefully with as many 180Go! members who can make it.

I'm leaning towards Montrose on the beach because the lawns are probably covered in goose droppings this time of year, and I prefer to keep my kites (and shoes) clean.

Cool . . . literally. It's supposed to be dry (as of tonight's forecast), but cold. Bring warm clothes and gloves - and vented kites. The point forecast for Montrose is showing a high of 48, with 15mph winds and gusts to 21-22mph.

I'm sure Mike will tell us that the forecasts are always wrong . . . so just bring all your kites ;) (but I'm planning on vented Revs and I'll have to figure out which of the SLKs are good for higher winds). If it's too windy on the beach, maybe we'll move over to the south side of the hill (but watch out for droppings).

I will probably get there in the morning, but I will be practicing with 180Go! until early afternoon. If you want to group fly revolutions, then I think I'll be able to do that around 2 pm or so. I can stay the rest of the day (or until I'm too cold to fly). It might be better in the afternoon anyway as that's when it will be the warmest (if we can call 48F warm).

Say and I will be flying at Busse Woods this Saturday from about 12 to 4. Limited amount of time available, so we'll be flying close to home. Two hours more flying without the added road time.

How about Oak Brook instead of Montrose? There's a group of soccer fields there that might be good (if they aren't covered in soccer players). They are located here just off Kensington in Oak Brook.

Hey David - The soccer fields are just south of Kensington. You can see them if you switch the Google map link to "satellite view" and zoom in.

As far as time, I will get there in the morning, hopefully by 9:30. I will be practicing 180Go! stuff I need to learn with Mike and Rose until 1 or 2 pm (I have a lot to learn/practice). Right now, I plan to stay most of the day - but I might have to leave by 3pm or so as I did not take my wife out for dinner tonight . . . and today was our anniversary.

If the fields are taken by soccer games, then I'm not sure where we'll go instead . . . Mike needs to stay near Oak Brook as his wife is at a conference there, and he needs to be able to get back to pick her up. Busse might be an alternative if the soccer fields are full - it's probably about 20-25 minutes from Oak Brook. If plans / location changes, we'll post something to this thread in the morning. And/or PM me your cell phone number and I can call/text you tomorrow (this applies for Mark and Say as well). Sorry if you've sent it to me before, but I had to change phones due to a work "transition" and therefore I lost some of my contacts.

All that said, you're welcome to show up whenever works for you.

One additional note - if you are coming east on 88, the easiest way to get there is to exit York Road from the I88-I294 south exit, turn left at the light, right onto 22nd, left onto Jorie, and then right onto Kensington.

Hey Steve it was nice of you for showing up and fly with us. I got a question where did you get that spinning where? I think it's called the Catherine's Wheel.

It was on ebay. I'll PM you the seller's ID. They don't have one for sale right now, but maybe you can ask them with a message.

BTW, it was nice to get to fly with you and Mark as well. I haven't seen you guys since the retreat. Us Chicago-area folks should try to get together. My weekends are often busy with kid's stuff, but if you are going to go fly at Busse or other locations, just post a thread and maybe I can make it. There are several other guys who also sometimes can make it (like illescasd).

Say (zero1199), you were doing great when we were flying our Revs as a group, especially since the winds were variable . . . and I took you out to the edge of the window a few times. Hope we can do it again soon.
