Our project Kite Machine Chicago http://community1.maker.good.is/projects/kitemachinechicago?sort=popular is up for a grant in the current GOOD Maker contest, and it would be wonderful if you were able to vote! The project with the most votes wins.
The organization of which I'm a part, The Kite Collective, is a soon to be incorporated non-profit that uses kites and craftsmanship as a platform for exploring physical theory and community building. Our signature project The Kite Machine, was launched in Far Rockaway, Queens, this past summer. The Kite Machine is a refurbished vending machine that distributes handmade, miniature kites (made out of recycled windbreakers & umbrellas) for 2 quarters (what the machine was built to accept) and by donation to spread the joy of kite flight, increase access to experiential arts education and incite urbanites to interact with their environment in a way that is transient and magical. When you put those quarters in, the kite chooses you (no choosing of colors/etc.).
The Kite Machine is a public arts project, rather than a kite sales medium. We make as many kites as possible with a volunteer group and fill the machine up when we have a load ready to go (not if/when the batch sells out). The Kite Machine serves as a landmark for community building, arts education, enjoyment and invites collaboration of artists and fellow kite enthusiasts to participate. We offer kite-making workshops with organizations that believe in the power of wonderment and experiential arts education and work with (not against) existing kite vendors to increase the network of kite lovers and flyers.
Please share with friends and kite fiends alike! THANK YOU!!!
