The focus of this class is to train fire fighters to recognize deteriorating conditions on the fireground so they can avoid becoming trapped, and teach them basic survival skills to effectively remove themselves from a hostile environment. Part of the mandate was to train firefighters in rapid intervention techniques. By wearing these items, any officer could quickly identify who was RIT trained and who was not, which was beneficial on the fire ground. This is a big misconception and also a common occurrence among fire departments. I can say without a doubt that removing a firefighter or even a victim by use of ground ladders is a weak spot for many fire departments across the country.
