IKE Retreat, Oct 15-16

Postby Mike » Sat, Sep 10 2011, 11:33 AM

We're doing an IKE retreat!
Oct 15-16 at the Indiana Dunes.

I've never been to the area, so I'm relying on people who have been there for details.

Here's a suggested hotel:
Best Western Portage Hotel & Suites
6200 Melton Road, Portage, IN 46368-1319
(219) 734-6727 ‎

The hotel has free wifi, free breakfast, a frig in the room and a pool.

(the original discussion of the retreat is [here]

Can someone post a map of where to meet to fly?

Post here if you're coming.
Post here if you're looking for a roommate to share costs.

I'm probably out that weekend . . . due to travel for work. I'll post here if that changes.

Were in. We would meet at the main parking lot for the Indiana dunes state park. I will post a map when I get a bit more time tonight!

I have tried to save the map image from Google and can't seem to get it right. If you look at the map Rt 49 heads north from Interstate 94. 49 turns into the park entrance. So it is as simple as getting off at 49 and driving north until you hit the gate and parking lot. The cost to get into the park is $6 per car I think.

Do you mean to park at one of these pins?

Exactly, I think the blue pin is the actual parking lot. We have always walked down the beach a bit to the northeast. So that side is the closest.

I added it to the IKE Map under IKE Retreat--Indiana Dunes. (click on Maps at the top of this page)

. . . and, as of this morning, the retreat is looking less likely for me due to work. I'm probably going to be out of town over that weekend - hopefully with kites, and also hopefully with time (and good enough weather) to fly them. I'll have the final decision by the end of September.

Maybe we'll have to schedule a kite building session in November/December/January . . . Mark can show us how to remove weight from all our kites (or is Mark's work kite UN-building :-D  ). Actually, in all seriousness, if I miss the retreat, I still would like to get something (or multiple things) built this year. I've got a sled I started (cut but not sewn for the 1/3 size prototype, paper patterns only for the full size - no fabric cut yet). I've also thought about sewing a custom sail for a Rev for fun - maybe a super vented or something interesting that you can't get from Revolution. I have ideas, but not a lot of forward motion. Would anyone be interested in another retreat to build some stuff? If I had an event . . . well, maybe I'd get something done (plus learn from IKErs with experience building kites).

A kite building session is a good idea. Start a new thread and we'll get it going.
I don't feel comfortable doing an IKE sponsored Rev nock-off workshop, but anything else is fair game. We'll discuss it in a new thread.

My intent is not to knock-off Revs. There seem to be plenty of Rev pilots who sport their own custom sails, without a problem from Revolution as far as I can tell. There are quite a few well known fliers that come to mind immediately that have made their own custom sails, or have Rev sails that they've modified / personalized. There are also masterpiece series kites (that have a Rev logo) that started out as something built for personal use (I think the mesh kites from Shook started that way). If I were to make a custom sail to get something unique I can't get from Rev, I'd still be using standard Rev spars and bridles.

OK, 'nuff said. I won't look to build a sail for a Rev if we have an IKE-organized building session. Hmm . . . I don't have a Rok yet . . . . .
