Who is flying what, where and when this week 7/24-7/30

Postby goestoeleven » Sat, Jul 23 2011, 10:18 PM

Greetings again! I hope this week brings less heat and more steady wind to all. I also hope to get in a lot of flying this week as I'm taking some days off work . . . it just won't be in the Chicago area. I may be able to post up some pictures later in the week.

Remember that Mux is planning to fly in the Quad Cities on Saturday for the end of RAGBRAI. The original thread for that event is here. I believe Jeepster is headed out to help & fly as well, and it sounds like a lot of fun.

Happy flying all & have a great week.

Well . . . where I am had mostly rain all day. There was a break mid afternoon, so I went out to fly for a bit. Vented 1.5 on 3 wraps and 120s . . . and it was WAAAAYYYYY too much wind for that kite. I was having a fun time . . . until the cloudburst. Soaked to the core, wrapping up the lines in blinding rain. I did get back out for another 15 minutes after sunset/dinner and the wind had calmed down quite a bit (still vented tho). More to follow . . . hope tomorrow is better.

Yeah? So are going to tell us where you are, or are we playing 21 questions? :-?

Flew today at Busse Woods as I mentioned in the "Who is flying..." thread from last week. Home-made rev that's pictured there, used to be all-white, got un-white during the weekend rains. Broke it again in 6-7 mph wind towards evening, flying on 85'x50#. Switched to my other ul home-made wht/grn/pur rev, flew nicely. I'm getting good at repairs and bridle adjustments.  :-D :-D

OK --- Question 1: Is the State you're in larger than New Jersey? :jester:

You're assuming he's in the US.
Remember the last time, he flew with the Decorators!

Yes, in the US, and state is larger than NJ. No plans to go fly with the Decorators anytime soon, unfortunately. Not raining at the moment . . . but it looks like lots of rain is just to the south and west. My location is Kure Beach, NC. Forecast is for 1/2 inch of rain and 18-21 mph winds today.

Nice, that's just a short swim from where I'll be in a few weeks: Holden Beach, NC. All I have is a full-sail kite - sounds like I better take some duct tape with me. :blink2:

Take some scissors to cut vents with.

If you're pretty sure you're hooked, just go for it and get a vented. You wont regret it. The 2 sails are all you need to fly in most any wind conditions.

So much for the forecast. It's been no rain except for a few sprinkles (good) but winds in the 0-3 range (not so good). I could not keep a SUL in the sky on 120s (I was hoping there was some wind higher up). Maybe later today.

Edit: Later in the day, the wind was much better. I flew a full sail 1.5 on 120s for about an hour or so, then switched to vented for another 1/2 hour or so. I don't know . . . I was having too much fun so it might have been longer.

Last weekend's wind sucked....was in park for two hours each day hoping it would pick up. Just hoping this weekend it gets better...

Flew today at Turner Park in Roselle, Supersonic, 1.5sle, and my ex-white ul home-made rev. Squirrely winds in that park, don't know why I keep going back there. Was there for about two hours 'til dark. May have novice joining the dark side. He was amazed you could do that with a kite. Wrote dowm some info for him and asked him to come out to a fest or club fly if he wanted to see someone whose actually good fly one.

Does anyone want to fly? I'm tied up Friday morning 'til about 2pm. Other than that, any time any day. Post up people, and let's fly!

Flew for a couple hours last night. Was nice to finally get out and not be cooking. I actually spent a good portion of it teaching my niece, nephew, sister and a couple other kids how to fly. Duelies mostly. But I did get some time myself.
Mark, That paint job came out fantastic. I know from experience how tough that rattle can paint is to use. I am impressed.

Flew today at Busse Woods, full vent Phantom, 1.5 blk/red sle, both on 90#x120', Symphony 1.4 (dual line foil) on 70#x90' and my "white bat" (quad line) on 90#x85'. Damn, I love flying the Symphony; fastest little foil in the West, East, North and South. Turns on a dime and is easily recoverable. I'm thinking about getting the 1.8 sometime soon.

Flew for 5-1/2 hrs from 1 to 6:30. Wind started out at E 10-15, dwindling over the next hour to 0. Sat around for about an hour and it started up again, slowly picking up speed and gradually shifting to due south 8-12 mph. Got to fly a bunch of different stuff -- fun day!

I'm at home now and I'm gonna start tweaking the blk/red 1.5 sle again. I know it's a bad habit, but not one I can break 'til I get it flying "Mark-style". Also thinking of playing with the delta-shaped quad-line foil I built 3 years ago (remember that one Mike? You played with it a bit two years ago at the state pen). I fixed the nose folding over problem with a fiberglass rod and now that I understand four-line control a bit better I may be able to adjust it so that it can move the I want it to. It weighs a ton, so it will need a strong wind to get up.

I'll be at the QC fly on Saturday -- see you there if you can make it.

About an hour and half in nice beach winds today. Full sail followed by vented. Dipped the wing tips in the waves, and played with the kids playing in the surf. Much fun!
