July 9 2011 - Greene Valley - fly for fun

Postby goestoeleven » Sat, Jun 25 2011, 11:36 AM

On Saturday, July 9th, David and I have volunteered to talk about kite flying and to do some flying at Greene Valley. Anybody else want to join us at the top of the hill? There are two areas - one near the overlook where it's possible to fly on 120' lines, and another mowed circle of grass about a quarter mile west of the overlook & parking lot. The second area is a bit less than 120' around, so anyone flying there probably should be on lines less than 100' in length if you want to keep your kite (or yourself) out of the long grass. They only mow the circle and the overlook. The Greene Valley map is here

Here's the Forest Preserve's advertising for the day. I don't think it will be a big "event" - but it would be nice to have some fellow IKE members out there to demo dual and quad flying. Hope to see some of you out there.

Good catch . . . sorry I forgot to put that one on the original. 11 - 1 pm, but I will probably get there earlier and stay later (unless my daughter's softball team is in the league playoff finals game).

I happened to find a link to some pictures (not mine) from the top of Greene Valley, where the Forest Preserve kite event is on the 9th, in case anyone wants to get an idea of what it's like up there. The grass off the path is a bit longer than in these pictures, but the overlook area is mowed.

Here's the link!

The photos are useful--thanks.
Who knows, maybe I'll drive up too. Then spend Sunday in Chicago.

As of right now I am planning on coming up to fly with you. I will watch the weather, and know for sure when the day gets closer. Looks like a good place to fly.

Sounds great, we'd love to have company!

It's a good place to fly because it's above the plain and there are no trees. However, the flyable area is not as huge as the pictures seem to show. Most of the hill is not mowed, so the grass is long in summertime. The area around the parking lot is mowed (inside the fence), and there are a couple spots where you can lay out 120 foot lines. You just have to be aware of people on the paths when flying and steer clear of them (unless you are getting little kids to chase the kites :-D ). We've never had an issue with up to two or three (relatively novice) rev flyers at a time. The other hilltop has a smaller mowed circle so you'd need lines shorter than 100 ft or so to fit in that space. Of course, if you don't mind flying over the long grass . . . . then the flyable area is enormous, with a slope to provide extra updraft. The only other conflict for kites is RC glider pilots, but I've never had a problem in the three times I've been up there.

Cool if you can make it. Bring some of your homemade kites so visitors can see that kites don't have to all be store bought.

If the forecast holds true, it should be nice.
No rain, steady 8mph winds from the south.

8 mph from the south is great because the "long" edge of the hill runs east / west. Plus, the far end (past the path) is pretty good when the wind is from the south.

I have one question . . . the good news is my daughter's softball team is now in the league playoff finals playing for the championship (they won tonight) . . . the bad news is the game is Saturday from noon to probably 2:15 pm, and my wife has to work . . . so right now, nobody will be at her game if I stay at Greene Valley the whole time. So . . . if any other IKE members make it to the event, do you think you could stay at least until 1 pm? The "event" is supposed to run from 11a - 1pm. If someone can cover the last 1/2 hour for me, I could probably make the last half of my daughter's game. I could come back to the hill as soon as it's over . . . if anyone else stays longer to fly more. If not, no problem - I promised the FP I'd do to the event, so we'll stay if nobody else is there.

Just verifying the location of the fly.
Is it where the arrow is pointing?

That's the correct location. It's the top of a big grassy hill (landfill). You can't miss it if you are on Greene Road - the entrance to the hill is on the north side of the hill from Greene Road, and it's got a big chainlink gate set back from the road which should be unlocked by 11am. I'm meeting the FP ranger there about 10:30 or so. I think there's also a big "Overlook Open" banner / sign posted when they open up the gates. See you there.
