Upgrading To Windows 7 ?

Postby TeamTrejo » Wed, Dec 23 2009, 01:31 PM

We have 3 laptops two with Vista which I hate. :x: One with XP which I don't mind.

Thinking of doing the upgrade to Windows 7. Anyone done this yet? Any problems?

I think Office Max had a 3 pack of upgrades for something like $149

Both of my home PCs are upgraded to Win 7, and I love it. No problems, whatsoever.

I've heard the upgrade from XP is a little trickier than from Vista.
Jeff, can you comment on the upgrade process from XP to Windows 7?

I upgraded a laptop from Vista( 64-bit} to Windows 7 (64 bit}. I did an upgrade and not a fresh install. No problems and Windows 7 is definitely better than Vista. A little less obnoxious than Vista with permissions and seems faster all around. I still have issues with Windows 7/Vista PCs talking to XP PCs on my network.

I think I'll leave the XP machine alone for now. Not broke, don't fix it, type of thing.

I think the difference is that with Vista, you can do an "in place" upgrade, but from XP you need to do a clean install. But that's fine with me, I'd rather just install clean when I install a new OS. I hadn't installed since I put XP on in what...2001?

I keep my data on a different drive than the OS, so I didn't have to worry about backing that up, but Microsoft does have a piece of software for download that lets you copy all your data and settings off your drive to transfer back after the new install is done. So I used that for my general settings.

But the upgrade was easy. After running that backup, it's just a matter of putting the disc in, going through a few prompts, and letting it do its thing. Then after, you run the Easy Transfer program to get your settings back.
