Coming To Chicago

Postby quaa714 » Mon, Nov 23 2009, 11:03 AM

Hi all,
Rich here....quaa714 on the Rev forum.
I'm going to be in Chicago this week from Wednesday to Sunday. Obviously can't fly on Turkey day but does anyone have plans to fly on Wednesday Friday or Saturday?
I'm staying in the city and would love to hook up and fly with some of you, possibly at Northerly Island or any other place I could get to easily.
best way to reach is on my blackberry rich(dot)comras(at)nbcuni(dot)com

Hope to see, meet, fly with some of you if possible.
Thanks in advance.

Where in the city will you be, Rich? (Downtown, north side, etc.) Will you have your own transportation?

I can check with the family and see if I could get away one of those days... (Friday or Saturday)

I would probably have a higher probability of making it if it's not all the way downtown. I'm in the far northwest suburbs.

@ Jynx.... :rotfl < I knew if given the chance to fly with you on your home turf, you'd find a way out!! Guess it'll have to be TI!!!!!!!

@ Jeff & Isaac.....I'm staying at the Sutton Place Hotel on Rush & Bellvue in the touristy part of town. I will either have a car to use or can taxi to wherever I need to get to. Friday and/or Saturday works well for me. Can likely steal a few hours both days, earlier prolly better but will leave it open for now and base the time and place on your feedback. I have some friends who live up by Wrigleyville. Their son may want to fly as well so if there is place up there that works for flying, I could get there too.

Typically, what are the prevailing wind conditions? I'd like to travel somewhat light kite wise and only bring a couple/three kites . Temps are not a problem as I don't mind the cold but to not have the right kite(s)..... a travesty!!!

I'll have a laptop with me and will be able to see the forum/posts but the best way to get me is via blackberry/email..... rich.comras@nbcuni.com

Conditions? Completely unpredictable!

For flying in the city, we've only done two places...Northerly Island, and the field at Montrose Harbor which is closer to Wrigleyville.

(See the Maps link near the top of the page.)

The Island is probably a better bet for most wind conditions. Montrose is ok if the wind isn't from the W, NW or SW.

If you are in the city then Northerly Island is the place to fly. Wind conditions can vary drastically. From laboratory smooth like we had last Saturday to all out gale. Bring an SUL and Vented and you are set.

I see from your profile that you like live music. I suggest you go to Blue Chicago for the best Blues in the city.

Looks like I'll have some free time both Saturday and Sunday.
Northerly Island seems to be the the likely place to go so I'll plan on that. My time frame is likely 10 or 11 am until say 3 or 4 on both days.
I do have transportation and a GPS so if another spot is more ideal wind wise or travel wise, I'm open to driving if need be.
My friends live in the Lincoln Park area so if there is somewhere up near there that might be easier for you Jeff, that could work as well.

I look forward to seeing anyone that can make it......except maybe Jynx   :loveit:

My best bet is probably Saturday. I'll get word to you when I confirm if I can do it.

Forecast is quite cool for the weekend, with Saturday described as "breezy." Sounds like vented weather to me.
