Interesting Spam

Postby Mike » Mon, Nov 02 2009, 07:58 AM

The forum has had some interesting spam lately.
We've had three members sign up and each of them post 2 entries in the forum.
Each spent less than 5 minutes on the forum, claimed they were from London and had 2 links to London-based businesses in their signature.

The posts all came from Sri Lanka though.
I deleted SilientKillers posts since no one had responded yet.

I left the posts by chronicent and HanaKhan, but deleted their signatures.

I also deleted the three memberships.
And I blocked any further membership requests from IP address 124.43.*.* for now.

So what do you guys think is going on?
Here's my guess:
Search engines count how many links there are to a given web page. They use this to adjust that web page's rank on a search. Everyone wants to be at the top of a Google search page.
I think there is a London based business that is selling a service to boost a site's Google rankings. They then hire real people who are payed pennies to join forums and post two seemingly real posts, and leave behind links to boost rankings.

I think you nailed it Mike.

Google search on "chronicent" show lots of junior memberships in totally unrelated boards. In the one I checked, there were two posts of polls; great way to generate lots of responses that I assume influences Google rankings.

Hopefully, no one will discover that I am just a bot trying to elevate my search results...oh wait, did I say that out loud?

When's the Droid due? Late this week, right?
Are you getting one or is Susan waving her hand and saying "This is not the Droid you're looking for."

Droid comes out Friday.

I'll hold off a little bit to see what people think once it's being used in the wild. Plus, there haven't been any employee discounts announced yet, so I'll wait for word on that...

There's a review of the Droid in the NY Times:
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/11/05/techn ... yt&emc=rss

Two things concern me:
"apps have to be stored in a 560-megabyte chunk of built-in memory"

and this bothers me even more:
"The Droid’s Web browser is good, but slower than the iPhone’s. And you have to zoom in and out by tapping +/- buttons or double-tapping the screen. That is, you can’t control how much to zoom, so you get far less control (and pleasure) than “pinching and spreadingâ€
