A-KAPping I Will Go...

Postby Jeff » Thu, Aug 06 2009, 09:28 PM

Step one complete...

Received my radio transmitter and servos today.

Made the modification to one of the servos for continuous rotation, for the one that pans the camera around 360°.

Will get the kit for the rig itself (hopefully) tomorrow.
Keep calm, and park it in the pocket

Knew you'd get into this... just didn't figure this soon! (Saw your eyes bug-out when you were checking out the set-up on July 3rd)

KAP rig complete...

I've got it set up to hold either the point & shoot in the picture, or my SLR. I'll practice a bit with the P&S when my lifter kite arrives this week.

I'm starting off with a Sutton Flow Form 16. Should get here by tomorrow.

We just got in some new awesome lifters. Had one out this last weekend and it was very cool. Just wish I had a KAP rig to attach to it.

Pro Air Forms from A Wind Of Change

For the price and what you get, these lifters are a huge bargain.
Happy Winds!

Those look nice, pretty big though!

I'll have to get accustomed to my dinky little 16 before thinking about something that big. ;-)

Yes, I actually have seen that before when I was researching. And then I saw that the AKA posted it today.

I managed to get out for a while yesterday to try and snap some aerial pics. Seemed like more than enough wind. Turned out to be an exercise in frustration.

One moment, the kite is pulling like crazy, the next it can't hold the less than 2 lb rig up. And jumping back and forth, swinging the rig like crazy. (I did have a tail on the Flow Form to help smooth out the flight. Without a tail, it would be even worse.)

I am hoping it was just a lousy wind day.

I took a bunch of shots, only a couple were halfway decent.

I noticed that the lines that go through the picovet cross show wear where the rub going through the holes. I'd like to find little pulleys like the ones on the Brooxes site that are out of stock.

Jeff,

I suspect the holes in the top bracket have sharp edges due to being punched or drilled. You might try using small rings (split type key rings) between the bracket and the hanging lines ... at least until you locate an available pulley.

Watched a gentleman taking KAP pictures at the Perry Farms festival on Saturday. He kept the camera much closer to the ground than I thought KAP fliers would ... in the 20 to 40 foot range.

Glad someone in the club is going through the growing pains ... will help the rest of us when that bug bites.

Pictures would be nice ... National Geographic quality is not necessary!!!

Cheers,
Tom

That was Dan Brinnehl of Chicago Fire. He's got a flickr page which includes his KAP work. Some of his photos are from up high like you'd expect.
Here's a cool one of a Rev mega-fly--check out the shadows.

Thanks Mike ... I should have gone and talked to him ... it was simply too hot for clear thinking.

He's taken some really cool pictures. Makes me want to add KAP to my bucket list ...

Cheers,
Tom

Wow, does he ever have a lot of kite flying pictures ... both KAP and non-KAP. 71 pages of kite pictures. I missed seeing him at Grand Haven, but the pictures show he was there. Neat ... thanks again Mike.

Tom

Yeah, Dan is a great photographer, KAP or otherwise.

Maybe we'll have a KAPping party up at Two Rivers. :)
