Quads Invade England

Postby Jeff » Tue, Sep 02 2008, 01:36 PM

Found this after I posted the Bristol thread. Probably should have just kept it in one.

Here's IKE's own Mike with iQuad and half of England in a 47 kite mega fly.

IKE is on Image too!

This was in Portsmouth. Considering it was a mix of experienced and inexperienced fliers it was pretty cool. Most megaflies are mostly follows.
48 would have tied the world record, but Jonesey, the 48th guy was watching from the parking lot.

In Bristol the winds were very light and the mega fly was done by 6 experienced rev teams for a total of 36. Just keeping the kite in a horizontal hover was challenging in Bristol. I'd like to see video of how that one came out.

It was terrific flying with renown teams like the Decorators from England, Flic from France, Time Out from the Netherlands, Bolau from Spain, The Flying Squad from England, and Too Much Fun from the US. Also hanging out them at the local pubs was great fun. I think the Flic team can out-drink iQuad...

The mass confusion that happened towards the end of the routine was caused by two radios (mine and Steve's) starting to screech at full volume. We couldn't hear any of the calls for a little while. We had been pretty good at guessing what was going on for several moves, and then we both guessed wrong at that point. We ripped the earpieces out of our ears and continued after that point.

180GO! will always start the day with fresh batteries to keep that from happening. It happens too often with iQuad.

We made two revs and then flew them toward each other for a kiss.

In this video it looks like your all flying identical, 20th anniversary kites.

Must be pretty confusing. How do you know who is who when flying?

In link you posted I think they're regular team kites, though we did fly the anniversary kites as a team too.
I know my position in the sky in various maneuvers (3rd from the top when vertical, in the middle on twin radars...) and don't seem to have a problem losing track.

Here is the 20th anniversary team.

I never thought too much of these as an individual Rev but they look pretty sharp as a team.

The design of the kite has the modern, B-Series style on one half and the original Rev I triangle on the other half.
It has a twentieth anniversary logo printed on it and each one is signed by Joe and Dave Hadzicki.

Ben brought one to England and had it signed by all the Rev teams. I wish I had thought of doing that.

Ben is donating the signed kite to the auction at the AKA convention.
If anyone wants me to bid on it in their behalf, let me know. It will be interesting to see how much it sells for.

Watching iQuad's demo to stairway was kwel. I really like the collapsing of the ball at the five minute mark and going into the four man fly thru. Had to watch it twice before understanding what was going on.

The mega fly I am speechless on.

Over all looks like a great time. So jealous of your once in a life time chance Mike.
May Ol Ma Nature never hold her
breath on you.

That move is actually more complicated than that and has the bizarre name of "Philly Cheese Steak with an Onion Return." Usually just called "Philly."

In brief: after the ball, the kites pair up in reverse kisses, the 4 corner kites fly individual diamond shapes followed by a fly thru, while the center 2 fly in and out. Getting smacked in the middle of the return fly thru is optional :-)
