Chris and I spent this afternoon teaching a 2 hr kite class to 1st-8th graders at Resurrection Lutheran School today. My daughter is in Kindergarten there and when they found out I flew and was in a club, they asked me to teach a 'Pioneer Days' class for them. Of course, I roped Chris into helping me.
The class had about 30 kids in it and they seemed to have a great time learning about the different kites we fly and build. The adults (there were about 10 parents helping out, including my wife) liked the history part. No one like the part about WHY kites fly... gonna leave that one out next time...
After history, the hows and showing them a bunch of kites, we handed out some kite kits and everyone spent the next 1/2 hour putting them together. This also went well and when it came time to put them in the air, everything flew... even though there was only about a 2-5 mph breeze.
They tried to pay me for the kite kits but I told them to take the money and use it for the school. They have done such a GREAT job with Elie over the last 2 years that I couldn't accept anything for the joy of giving something back.
It was great fun watching the kids and their excitement for kites... very heartwarming...
And we get to do it all again next Friday at Mill Elementary School!
