WSIKF 2013: August 19-25, 2013

WSIKF 2013 is about 10 months away now . . . and I want to go. In addition to being one of the biggest kite festivals in the US, it's also a GREAT festival for serious kite flyers because they have five huge dedicated fields staked out on the beach and revolution pilots get (at least) one of them. For the Rev pilots, they are hoping to try for a 100 kite mega grid in 2013. The beach is enormous, the people are great, the wind is great (bring your vented kites), and the weather (while it can be cool and variable) is usually pretty good in August in Washington. It's a whole week of kite flying, if you want to stay all week. If you don't, within a three to four hour drive you have Seattle, Olympic National Park, Mt. Ranier, Mt. St Helens, Portland, Mt. Hood, and the Columbia River gorge. In 2011, we geared our week long family summer vacation around 3 1/2 days at WSIKF, and it was great.

OK, enough selling. I want to go next summer, but the family can't go because it overlaps with the first week of school for our school district. I'm willing to work on arranging housing, looking into flights from Chicago, sharing rental car(s), etc. To do that, I'll need some idea of who wants to go, and whether or not you can commit (because things like renting a house or condo to share will probably require a deposit and/or payment up front). Ideally, if we can get decisions and and commitments soon (maybe by the end of October), then we can get plans in place.

Hope to hear from a lot of you soon!

I too am planning on attending! ...and it's the 25th Anniversary so that should bring the number of attendee in/up as well!

I already have accommodations. I'd get ahold of Steve NOW if you want to find accommodations! They are filling up fast! (There are also camp grounds in the area).

The event is something, anyone who has the opportunity and means, to consider! ...and 2013 should be a real last!

Being a part of the '64' Rev mega-fly was unbelievable... I can only imagine how exciting 100 (+) would be!

Jynx -

Whereabouts are you staying - in town or outside of town? I'm thinking if enough people are up for it, I'd look into getting a house or maybe a couple two bedroom condos. However, I think that most of the nearby / walking distance stuff will be gone, so the most likely scenario is to try for a place a few miles away / driving distance. However, if I don't get enough people committing to the trip up front to justify a condo, I'll make my own arrangements. Worst case scenario . . . tent, sleeping bag, air mattress . . . which ain't half bad. It's what my son and I did for Grand Haven this year.

Peggy and I would love to see the mass Rev fly but she's a college professor and that week will be the first week of classes, so we're out.

I have a studio condo unit on the beach... well not 'ON' but right there!'

Not sure yet if I'm flying or driving, it'll depend on other included vacation plans!?

Steve,

I checked with Adventure Dog & she has a prior commitment... What it could be, I have no idea. However, I have interest in partial attendance.

OK, somebody (I'm looking at you Mike ;) ) edited the heading to add the dates (thanks) but subtracted the "3" from "2013" :( . I don't think I can edit the heading . . .

I'll start looking for some condos - for at least 3-4 nights, likely starting Tuesday/Wednesday with a departure on Saturday. I'm assuming I'll be flying back on Sunday morning to get back to work on Monday, which will mean leaving Long Beach for Portland or Seattle on Saturday afternoon / evening. Another possibility is leaving Sunday afternoon / flying back Monday morning.

Sorry about that. You might be able to edit the heading if you edit your first post.

I think I'd like to stay for as much of Saturday as possible.

This was our tenth year at WSIKF. In those years we have had two full weeks of sun and wind. Most years there is a day or two of some rain or light wind. We always stay for the entire time. With the Festival being a full week, one can usually be assured of many days of great flying.

The past two years we have had one, and at times, two or more of the 400x400 ft roped off Rev fields. There is plenty of room for single fliers, and always groups ranging from three or four to lines and grids of many.

If the 100 happens, it will be a great week. If the 100 does not happen, it will still be a great week.

Long Beach Washington is a fun little town that really gets behind what ever event is happening. There are many good places to eat that are not over priced. Chico's has good Pizza and Michelob Amber Bock on tap.

This year Lynn and I will arrive in Long Beach on Saturday, July 27 and leave Monday, August 26th. Yup, that's a month. A month of flying in a great place.

From Long Beach we will be heading for Antelope Island, Utah.

Hope to see many of you there.

Wow. Just wow.

I better get to work on the reservations . . . maybe the whole week is a better idea.

BTW Jim, great to see you visiting IKE again!

We are looking forward to KP as always. It will be good to see you Mike. Certainly one of the best events anywhere.

I don't visit here as much as I used to because when we are using our Verizon MIFI, it still will not get to your server. It pings, but will not enter. My Verizon guy thinks there is some sort of compatibility problem. He explained what that might be, but it was a little beyond me. I am now using the cable at our condo in Laguna Woods, but on the road or at our home in Walnut Grove, no IKE Forum.

Anyone who even thinks that maybe they might have even a little interest in going to WSIKF next August should secure reservations, especially room reservations, ASAP. If it doesn't work out cancellation is always an option. We make our RV space reservations for the following year the day we arrive each year. We have never had to cancel, and I hope we never do,

There are a number of Rev fliers who go in a week or more in advance of the Festival. John, TK and Watty let it be known that they may be moving to Long Beach sometime next year. That would make for more pre-festival fun.

Monday morning I will be moving our site to a new server, we'll see if that helps your connection (I don't think it will though).

Wednesday we are headed north to our home in Walnut Grove. I'll give it a try then. We will be in Pismo Beach starting November 7th. That's where I talked to the Verizon guy. He seems very knowledgeable. If I have no success getting on in Walnut Grove, I will get more info from my guy then, and let you know what he says.

Hmm . . . I just booked a placeholder to KP 11. Didn't book a return (don't have enough points at the moment). Maybe I won't come back. I think we need another thread . . . .

Shari and I are planning on making this trip. I have to choose between KP and WSIKF. And we decided to go the WSIKF route. We would be willing to chip in on a condo type thing, or whatever seems to work out. I am sure we would come early in the week, Monday probably, and fly home on Sunday or Monday. However it works out.

I better get to work on lodging . . . my guess is the in-town stuff is booked up, which probably means we need to look at houses / condos a few miles away. I'm planning to get a rental car, because I'll need one anyway to get from Seattle or Portland to Long Beach. So, while in town/walking distance is best for flexibility and hauling gear, outside town probably works for cost & availability at this point.

There are many places to stay in Long Beach and in nearby Seaview and Ilwaco.

This may help someone.

Also, I know that Theresa at the Kite Shoppe may be of some help.
