Michigan City Kite Fest June 30th & July 1st

Postby Shari » Mon, Jun 25 2012, 12:34 PM

This coming Saturday and Sunday is the kite festival in Michigan City, IN. Being the 1st kite festival for the area and hopefully the start of many more. Lets see how many IKE'ers we can get to the beach.
:Logo180GO!: will be performing!!!

The kite fest will be at Washington Park Beach. June 30- July1, 11:00am-6:pm both days.

Should be a great time!
Everything seems so much better when the sky is filled with beautiful colors.

I'm hoping to make it on Saturday. Does :Logo180GO!: know when they're performing? If I can make it, I'm gonna have to leave early for an evening engagement.

Were on all day. Minus a water break and lunch break. I believe we are sharing the field with a dual line team, so half the time or more.

We actually prefer the festivals where we get to fly all day. At the last couple fests, we were the only stunt kiters and we flew the entire time. We mostly improvise to whatever music the DJ is playing. During most festivals I don't sit down until dinner. :)

I don't care for the festivals where you get up, do your 5 minute routine, and then sit around for an hour or more. Actually , I really don't like them and I think all of those are off our calendar. We like to fly!

You're right. Why bother flying if you don't want to do it all the time?

I don't know what the tenor of this fest will be, but we'll try to get a group fly in.
I forget, do you already know the moves in the manual?

Um . . . Mike . . . . you do know this is Steve, right? So you know that I keep forgetting where I'm supposed to fly through after a ball-and-burst (and who I'm supposed to go behind)? . . . and the super blender 'cause I forget where I'm supposed to go . . . . . I've been carrying the manual in my work backpack for the last year or so . . . but don't get enough group practice. Too much flying alone :( This is why I need group therapy - lack of group flying time means I don't know the right next move by heart for each line position for the calls. However, I'm fine for following, figure eights, flanking, pez, edges, ball (and bursting w/o fly through), benefits, and just general messing around. Tell me which moves you want me to know before the fest (and preferably where you'd like me to stand in the line), and I'll try to be ready . . . . plus I'll try not to pull a Rich C and throw axels around all the time or chase chicks and kids with the kite . . . (just kidding rich if you are reading this - i will attempt axels and mess with kids).

Looking forward to it . . . just tried to sell the wife on both days . . . . (not sure if that will work).

Note to new members who might want to try team Rev flying for the first time - you'll need to be able to hover in position (right side up is OK, ideally sideways as well), hold position at different points in the wind window, and fly a figure eight while controlling your speed. Ideally you'll have a set of 120ft lines (but I can loan a set if I remember to bring them). I'll be happy to fly with anyone who wants to try it out! and I have some beater revs for new fliers to try . . .

Anyone know if they will have a field roped off for sport kite fliers who are not performing and for large show kites? Here's hoping so . . . .

Preview of the weekend, I hope . . . . here's an image from an evening of flying this week after the end of the day while on a business trip . . . sorry for the lens flare from my cell phone camera.

Full vent on 40ft lines and my new homemade travel frame . . . . more crappy axels than I could count (but the wind was a bit high for axels . . . ). Lots of fun until it got dark-ish.

There may not be any fields roped off, even for performances. And as far as I know, there aren't any big show liters invited.
I think they are taking a low key approach to their first year.

How about you bring fifty stakes and I bring a roll of surveyor tape and a sledgehammer :)

Btw is anyone staying in a hotel? Unlikely that I will stay overnight but maybe I will try to convince my wife.

Weather is looking hot this weekend.

Unlikely I will stay overnight. I'm hoping to get the kids and maybe the wife to this one so the logistics might not work but I will keep it in mind

We weren't able to make it Saturday OR Sunday. How did it go?
I decided I needed a signature line, so I wrote this.

Sorry you could not make it. The short answer is that it was HOT with light winds. I wasn't there Saturday morning but the 180go guys said it was windy then. Small audiences for the performances as this is a new festival, but both the Windjammers and 180go were great.
