Spam outbreak

Postby goestoeleven » Thu, Nov 21 2013, 05:33 PM

Just a reminder - don't post any replies in spam threads. We seem to have a bit of an outbreak at the moment. Mike K does a mostly invisible job keeping the forum spam free by deleting spam threads before we regular users ever see them. However, if someone replies to a spam thread, he can't delete it.

Thank you Mike K.

The Russians are coming! The Russians are coming! All the spam has Russian IP addresses.
They must have figured out how to hack into our system.
The forum may go down for a while while I see if I can fix it. It will be a bear. The forum will probably look different when it comes back up too, as we have a lot of custom mods which we may lose.
I may not get to it until tomorrow. If the forum goes down (which it may not), try posting anything important on our Facebook page.

I've turned off new registrations. We'll see if that stops them for now. If it doesn't, then we've been hacked.
You can read the forum without being registered, but you can't post.
If anyone know someone who would like to register, PM me their email and desired forum name and I'll set them up manually.

Thanks Mike. I asked for Rosetta stone for Christmas, but not Russian.

So far it looks like we haven't been hacked.
Much of the spam seemed to be lonely girls looking for a nice guy. They didn't say if the guy needed to speak Russian :)
I expect to re-open registration tomorrow. I'll change the anti-spam questions and see how it goes.
