Spring Club Fly
Spring Club Fly
The weather is warming up and it's time to figure out our March club fly.
If some folks from Wisconsin are able to join us, maybe we'll have it up in the Chicago area this time.
First, lets start choosing a date.
I'm available any weekend this month.
How about the rest of you?

Re: Spring Club Fly
The second weekend is MAKR. 4th weekend is the most open for us.
Maybe we can just make this a standing 4th weekend of the month thing?

I agree... barring any unforeseen circumstances, picking a standard point in time during the month will allow people to plan their schedules out and avoid the back and forth we seem to go through in picking a date... Also, since I have obligations on both Sat & Sun's, it will allow me to rearrange my schedule.

Re: Spring Club Fly
4th weekend of the month, every month sounds good.
I'm thinking Saturday might be better for the members who attend church on Sunday.
I guess 7th Day Adventists, Jews and any others who attend church on Saturday may have to work around this, but I don't think that applies to any current members. If this changes, we'll modify the schedule.
So, I'm proposing a regular 4th Saturday of the month club fly.
First one to be March 24th.
Let's get some votes in: Yay or Nay?

Two Yays from the Draftnik household. Only two?
Re: Spring Club Fly
Yay! Saturday is good for the members who drive a few hours to rest before going back to work

It's a great satisfaction knowing that for a brief point in time you made a difference.

Re: Spring Club Fly
I am ok with the forth weekend, I will have a lot of conflicts whatever weekend is chosen.
So if the month starts on a Sunday like next month, is it the forth Saturday (forth full weekend) or the third Saturday (forth partial weekend)?
This month it will the Saturday before I leave for 12 days in France,so I can't fly anything need to take to Berck.

Re: Spring Club Fly
Good question Al. Let's make it the 4th Saturday of the month.
So next month, it will be on April 28th.
On weekends with festivals, the club fly will probably be at the festival.
We'll see how this spring and summer play out, but since almost all festivals are up north, we may wind up making club flies in the Kankakee area which seems to be somewhat central to our current membership. It seems be 1 1/2 hour drive or less for most of us.

Re: Spring Club Fly
For the April club fly, I'm going to request that we do it in Naperville... We are doing a class in Naperville on the 27th and were going to invite the class out on that Saturday to fly as our class is only 1.5 hrs long...
What's everyone think?

Re: Spring Club Fly
I think the club flys need to move around. I know that as my flying schedule fills up, my time at home gets scheduled tighter and tighter and being able to afford three hours of travel time would restrict the number of club flys I could attend. But then I see that I already have conflicts for May and June, March is just before a two week trip overseas, and there are other conflicts looming. So ignore my logistical problems.
There real question is how serious are we in using club flys as a recruiting tool? And how likely is a newbie to travel to a club fly to see if they really like kite flying? I submit that keeping the club flys in a "central" location will limit the exposure to new people to those near that location.
While it would be nice to make a club fly now and again, I attend enough events that I will get my kite fix whether the club flys move around or not. But do we want to limit exposure to potential new members?

Re: Spring Club Fly
IM O we should try a camp fly. Terre Andre is a greta place on lake Michigan. They do have a group camp site but the individual sites go real quick. Mostly FIBS. Also there is Bong, I've been there with the Sky Liners in the past. Not the greatest flying area, but, camping is pretty much available most anytime.
Know this, when scheduling kite flys there is always someone who can't make it bcause of kids, or work you can't worry about pleasing everyone as cool as it would be.
And another thing, the Madison Wisc, has a good group of flyers. Fitchburg is there home area. Contact Paul Feibers.

Naperville sounds like a good idea to me too.
It sounds like we should post directions to the park and put it on the calendar.

Re: Spring Club Fly
It's all right by me wherever you folks decide to have the Flys at. Like i mentioned before, though, if the Flys are at any appreciable distance for me, it will depend on the weather and how i feel (on that very day) as to whether i can make it or not; i drive quite a long distance throughout the week, to work and back, and often have to drive my wife to Chicago (to the doctors) and, oftentimes, i prefer just to stay locally on weekends to give myself a break. Hopefully when i retire, which won't be for too long, that will change.
