Indiana Dunes 2012

Postby Elix » Sat, Mar 10 2012, 02:47 PM

My wife and I are making a trek (4 hours) to the Dunes this summer, preferably during warm water so my kids can enjoy some swimming. She's giving me the opportunity to check with IKE first to see if there are any annually scheduled events that we can co-ordinate with. So this is my official request for information. If no such events exist, then I'd like this to be the start of a thread that tries to get a few folks together over a convenient weekend this summer. We're currently aiming for late June to August time frame though we aren't water temp experts, so if a different range would be better, please share what you know.

Thanks,
Chris

Sounds great to me - I'd like to fly the dunes as well. I missed last year since I was out of town for work. One suggestion - you might want to check the festivals calendar to avoid weeks / weekends when IKE members might be occupied, and I'd probably avoid the holiday weekends as well as the beach might be crowded. There are not as many events over the summer, but one that some IKE members get to is WSIKF, which is the whole third week of August (in Washington state).

You can check the Festivals link at the top of this page for conflicts. I haven't been there during the summer, but I'd be worried about crowds and finding room for a bunch of people to fly. Does anyone have experience with flying at the dunes in the summer?

Every time we go in the summer, we wait till later in the afternoon to go. Swimming closes at 5 and we usually show up at 4 or 5. There would probably be room as long as you dont mind walking a good ways down the beach.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but as I recall there are actually two "Indiana Dunes" parks, one at Michigan City, Indiana, and one at New Buffalo in Michigan. These two locations, in my recollection from 30 years ago, are completely different in nature. One has a very wide flat and deep expanse of sand, and the other is quite narrow from treeline to water and relatively steep. Which location is referenced here?

Actually both locations have about the same amount of beach. We have had much better luck with the Dunes national park beach. Another location is mount baldy, but it is a long hard walk from the parking lot to the beach. Over the top of a 200ft dune. It is that area you might be thinking of that has a narrow beach, as it narrows pretty quickly on either side of mt baldy. The best part of flying there is the wind quality. Thats the reason Shari and I will take the hour drive to fly there, instead of flying locally. The wind is usually coming off the water or down the beach. Both places charge $5 per car for parking. Maybe a bit more.

Not sure if you mean here

or here

or here (I think this might be Mt. Baldy, but I'm not sure)

or here (Warren Dunes State Park)

but I think you mean the first location / link. It looks like it has the widest, flattest beach with the easiest access from the parking lot.

Anybody tried flying here? (Illinois Beach State Park, Zion, IL)

You are right on all your locations. The first "here" is where Shari and I always go. And where we had our little retreat.
