Who is flying what & where this week? 2011-7/10-7/16

Greetings IKE people! Another week . . . and I hope everyone can get out and fly. I don't think we have any other threads or events this week, so no links in this update.

I'm planning to fly some tomorrow (Sunday the 10th). Since the weather forecast looks hot again, I think I'll probably look to fly in the morning and wrap up by early afternoon before it gets too hot & thermals start to play havoc with the winds. If anyone else wants to fly, I might try for Busse Woods or Northerly. Or maybe I'll be lazy and just head for the local field if the wind is OK there. I better check with the wife and see what works for her schedule tomorrow. I'll try to remember to post plans in the morning before I head out.'

I'm not sure yet about the rest of the week. This past week was pretty busy with work, and I expect this week will be pretty busy as well, so I may not get in much flying during the week.

I'm going to try and get out tomorrow. It's been far too long.

Ping me via PM (or post here) if you're interested in going to Busse Woods. I will check again before I head out.

on my way now

Flew (and sometimes not) for almost three hours. Didn't see Jeff :-| but did fly with Mark  . Full sail EXP on 120s. Mark had his homebuilt creations out.

I wasn't going to be able to go very far from home. Managed to get in about an hour today at a nearby park right before dinner.

I need to get out more.

Was blowing a bit by me this morning, but I think that >70mph is a bit much, even for an Xtra Vent!

Wow, that is some rough wind. Hope you have a generator handy.

In other news, my dry-spell is over! Got to fly tonight for over an hour on an SLE and 120' lines. It was quite a bit different than what I am used to.

What did you think of it? What spars were you using?

Honestly, I was a little disappointed. But just a little. Two weekends ago, I flew a full vent, B series on 120' lines at the beach and it was fantastic. Reverse flight was finally achievable and the kite was smooth as butter. The Full Sail SLE (using 3-wrap spars) is certainly easier to control than my no-name since the sail is twice as big. I was able to do tip landings and takeoffs plus slide sideways up and down in the window, which is great fun. But reverse flight still wasn't as good as with the full vent B. It was better than my no-name, but I was still struggling with that wind-buffet/tip-stall scenario. Sometimes the kite would just fight me violently when I'd try to slide backwards while the kite was turned 90 degrees left or right. And when inverted, it was all I could do to keep the kite hovering. Attempting to gain altitude would only cause unwanted oscillation and decent. I'm sure I'll get better with practice, but it was disappointing to feel like I took a step backwards in kite ability.

In related news, Big Mike emailed me last night letting me know my full sail B series had arrived from Rev. So once that ships out I'll learn what's making the most difference: the full sail vs the full vent or the SLE vs the B series design. I'm really hoping I get better reverse performance out of my new B. Otherwise it's gonna be slower going progressing on my own, and I might end up regretting not getting that mid-vent option.

The vented kites are a little more stable, but the full sail is still your best option. Once you learn on it, the vented kites will seem even better. You might not be flying with enough brake, try moving your top lines out a knot or two next time and see if it helps. Just keep flying and it will all come together in fairly short order. Reversing up the window is one of the hardest things to do, so don't let it discourage you when you can't do that right away. I have been flying for a few years and still have a hard time backing up vertically on a standard sail. Another tip: sounds weird but when trying to fly in reverse walk backwards. It actually helps for some reason I still don't understand.

The vented kites smooth out the bumpy Midwest winds, making it easier to fly with more precision. If you want some snap and faster moves, you'll want the full sail.
Oversteering is the hard thing to control when flying in reverse. Try constantly jiggling your hands a tiny bit while reversing. That sometimes keeps you from making too big a move.

Don't know whether this hurts or helps . . . but I still suck at flying in reverse (on pretty much every sail) after working on Rev flying for the last 11 months or so, so you are doing GREAT if you're flying in reverse after just a few sessions. As everyone else said, vented sails smooth it out, if you've got the wind for it. My reverse flight gets all wobbly . . . I need to spend more days just flying reverse. I'm going to have to try the hand motions Mike suggests to see if that helps. I noticed John B. doing that in some of his youtube videos, but you can't always see what the kite's doing when the camera is on him.

Keep up the practice, it'll get better.

John used to deny that he did that. :) Certainly not all good fliers jiggle, but I've seen many do it.

Maybe going to try to fly tomorrow during the day . . . but it will only be for a short time if I can sneak out of work for a bit around lunch time. Not worth trying to meet up . . . but hopefully I can get some time on the handles.

I have been out the last two evenings testing my "sparkaps". Catchy name huh. They work fantastic on concrete, and good on asphalt. It is difficult to find a large slab of concrete to test on. I will put together a video as soon as I can work out the schedule of the wind, Shari and I. I am pretty sure sail burns will not be an issue. So far so good!

Kite Party. At dusk. Concrete sidewalk. Drum circle pounding away. Team sparks!
