Northern Club Fly Locations

Lets get a list of possible locations for a Northern club fly.

Jeff and I have flown at the Bong Rec Area in Southern WI. Nice location for flying, lots of parking but you have to buy a annual pass to get in.

Illinois State Beach?

There is a really good beach in Racine WI

Rock Valley Collage in Rockford IL. It's where Ken McNeill of Blue Moon Kites used to fly when he lived in Rockford

Northerly Island in Chicago would be awesome. I don't think there are concerts there all summer.

Who has some ideas for flying locations? Lets hear em.

I like Northerly Island.

Illinois State Beach would be fun too...

There is also the field in Lisle that we flew on at Lislefest... although with sports going on, I doubt that it's going to be empty on a Saturday.

There are also some nice locations in St. Charles.

Illinois State beach has a pretty god area at te main swimming beach.. (but it is the swimming beach so lots of people when it is hot... ) then it gets skinny north to the power plant and south to the lodge, opens up a little south of the lodge.... over all its good for a few fliers otherwise you get spread out.

the north unit of IL State Beach is skinny all the way.. and teir is a nice little spot at the Winthrop Harbor Marina for a few kites.. and a beach fire for smores and puggy pies...

Kenosha's kite fest space is a city park so it should be fairly available...

all of them are better for easterly winds...

their is a park in Winthrop Harbor that is pretty good for westerly winds... you can get far enough east of the tree line that the wind is fairly calm... it is not as nice as the west side of Decatur, IL on a west wind day (their are no trees between Decatur and Springfield if I remember correctly)

I am looking for a place (as time permits) that is open to the east and higher up so the air is smooth..

I like Northerly Island best. Plus I know where all the best sushi places are.

I'll be in Chicago this Saturday. Will check to see if you can still drive to the old airport terminal parking area.

Northerly Island is good for Chris and me. We've been wanting to check it out.

Lisle is also convenient for us.

What time will you guys be flying saturday? Me and Shari have a wedding to go to in the city on saturday evening, and may try to meet up to fly with you guys. And maybe meet some new people. Hopefully the weather will be nice.

No date set yet. I'm just going to make sure that site is usable during concert season.

OK, maybe I'll fly a little.

We did a family fly at Northerly Island on Sunday. Thanks for the idea Isaac. :thanks:

We found coming in on 18th street and going behind Soldiers Field much easier than coming in off Lake Shore Drive.

We were able to drive down to the old terminal and park with no problems. The wind was light, but relatively steady. The views were great. We had the lake at our back and the Chicago skyline from south of the Sears tower to Adler Planetarium in front of us. We flew in the upper corner slightly north of the terminal.

Chris did a tip stand on the Sears Tower. ....................We also added a third flyer to the family.
