Where Did The Wind Go?

Hi everybody,

I went on vacation for a couple of weeks, helping my parents out with their house, and managed to get in some killer flying time on the beach in Muskegon, MI. It was fantastic (and, if possible, I'm even MORE hooked on flying than I was before). I got back and have been seriously stoked about flying, but by the time I get out of work at night, the wind has pretty much died for the night. Last weekend the weather websites said Vernon Hills was good, but when I'd get out there the wind would have already died away.

So yesterday I checked the weather forecast and I thought "ooh, I should be able to go out and fly this weekend, finally." Got up at 5:30 this morning, tidy up around my place, settle down in front of the 'puter to check the weather and..... no wind. None. The entire area, all the way up to Milwaukee is "calm."

Anybody got any suggestions? Do you think it's just me? Am I in some sort of weird, Twilight Zone-ish "cone of no breezes"?

*grin & sigh*

I suppose I need a hobby that is not dependent on the weather, huh?

There's supposed to be wind tomorrow, at least in Champaign:
Sunday: Partly cloudy, with a high near 84. North northwest wind between 13 and 17 mph, with gusts as high as 24 mph.

Hang in one more day....

Welcome to summer in the midwest.

I guess there's a good reason there's no festivals scheduled this time of year. ;-)

Had a WINDerful breeze at the Milwaukee lakefront today. Flew from 2pm till after 8 (when the rain came!) Took a few breaks to watch the rugby tournament on site.

A fellow kiter gave me this wind-speed site... (helpful for me as it also shows history)...

Thanks for the encouragement. :) And especially for the wind site, Jynx.

Looking good for today, I'm happy to say. So as soon as the cats are fed and the dishes done, I'm out in search of a field. :-D

Another good wind site is www.windmapper.com

You need to select the appropriate region on the left side. It gives history and a forecast and gives an animated map that can show what winds are coming your way.

It has inland locations as well. Mouse over the arrows to get the info you need. Left click on an arrow to get weather forecast info as well.

Today will be great day to fly!

I found the wind. 2 1/2 hours flying in heavy gusting winds. 4 wraps handled everything including gusting over 40 mph.

One more website: www.wunderground.com

It has history by day for the location and typically hourly. They also have graphs.

I managed to get some flying in today. I drove out to Vernon Hills and flew for about 2 hours, and then, suddenly... I had a revelation: flying a power kite, alone, in a field where no one really goes, in an unfamiliar area, after telling no one where I was going, during winds that were higher than I'd flown in before.... was incredibly stupid.

I caught a gust, I think. I'm not entirely sure what happened, because one minute I was flying the kite, and the next IT was flying ME. The impact with the ground and the subsequent drag (near as I can tell, about 15 or so feet) happened so fast that I'm not sure of much of anything except that I have been incredibly... stupid. Yup, that's the word I'm looking for. Oh, and I blacked out for at least a couple of seconds. (quick note - I have a safety line on my kite, which straps via velcro to my wrist, which is why the kite dragged me, I think, because I wasn't holding the control bar when my wits returned to me.)

On the plus side, I'm not really 1hurt. Sore, bruised, and a little friction-burned (hands, chin mostly, bruised chest & knees), and feeling really, really humble. And determined that the next time I fly, I will be flying someplace that people are around, or I'll be bringing a spotter or something. In the little more than 2 hours I was there, I never saw another person near that field - had I been hurt, who knows how long it would have been before somebody noticed the crazy woman lying there. My cell phone, and my ID, were in my car, which was far enough away that it would have been very bad if I'd been injured.

As I lay there on the ground, inventorying my parts and making sure everything was still attached and un-broken, I found myself thinking, "Wow, I am never, ever doing that again. Ever. Wonder how long it would take to sell the kite."

Then, as the shock passed, I thought, "wait a minute, this was stupid, yes, but to not ever fly my kite again? WTF am I thinking?" So I got up, and yes, more stupidity, relaunched my kite. I was very much afraid that if I didn't do it right then, I'd never work up the courage to do it. So I flew, very cautiously, for another 15 or 20 minutes, then landed the kite and packed it up.

Lessons learned: Don't fly alone. Pay attention to the wind. Don't fly alone. Did I mention the don't fly alone part?

I feel like an idiot, but one determined to learn from my mistakes.

*sigh*

No John , I found the wind!!!!

Check out the 49930 zip code area in Upper Michigan.

The current forecast is for the winds to dip below 15 mph sometime late Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning. Gusts are terrible. Temps in the 50s. Light drizzle off and on.

Spring should arrive here sometime in the next month or two. Geez.

Wonder how much an indoor kite costs???

Cheers,
Tom

Glad you're okay [strike]Cathy[/strike] Wendy ...

Even with just my 1.5 Revs and people driving by, I still have my cell phone with me when flying alone. Anything can happen ...

Cheers,
Tom

Happened to me the 1st time I took my 3 meter out. Caught a gust and went flying... literally...

What I learned was that I need to be careful and not fly in winds that will cause that to happen. I'm not looking for that kind of thrill at this point in my life. I just want to have fun. Anything above 12mph and I put the 3M away and go for something else.

May want to file a flight plan next time!

File a flight plan, for sure. *grin* I'm pretty sure I looked like Superman for about, oh, 2 seconds before I ignominously ate dirt.

You know, I really appreciate having people to talk to about this stuff - my friends are, for the most part, sedentary creatures whether by nature or circumstances, and none are interested in kite flying at all. So hey, thanks.

When's the next club fly? I'm looking forward to meeting people, and maybe getting pointers on flying... *grin* I already have the crashing down.

In my Younger days I thought face plants and power kites went hand in hand. :-D There is a couple funny videos of New Power kiters figuring that out the hard way on youtube. Also a scary one of a fellow who thought it would be a good idea to go kite boarding with an incoming hurricane in Florida. The wind always seemed so benign until I started in this hobby. Glad to hear you walked away unharmed (mostly)

There's also a fly Friday, July 3rd on the Milwaukee lakefront. It's not an IKE fly per se, but it is a kite fly, and there may be a couple IKE members there. (I might get out there myself)

From Scott Fisher:
in Milwaukee this Friday, July 3rd, the Tour de Kites continues with a
fun fly at Veterans Park from 11 am until 6 pm, just before the giant
fireworks display. If you come and fly kites with us, you will get the best
seats in the house for the fireworks. I mean really great seats, right up
front. We will also be grilling that day, so you are certainly invited for
lunch or dinner. You will need a parking pass, so let me know if you want
to come to the LF, and I'll set aside a parking pass for you. Nearly
100,000 people will be in and around the park for this fun event, and we
want to put on a great show prior to the fireworks.

I thought about getting a hotel and doing this one, but I've got other obligations that day.
