Did You Fly Today - 28 Dec 2008

If you didn't get out today and fly you missed a great opportunity in the middle of winter. The winds were light, the sun was bright and the temps were okay. Ended up flying way past sunset ... love the auto dealership lights. Learned that black sleeves look very cool in the summer sun, but are a pain to work with after the sun sets ... in the semi-dark the larks head knots look like fuzz balls.

When we had the club fly here in Washington a couple of weeks ago, Mike K. and Mike S. were fantastic working with my son on teaching him to fly in a group. However guys, you might want to rethink what you teach newbies ... seems my son now has no concerns about whose kite is where and what's happening with the lines. I spent most of the day flying off to the side of the wind window trying to protect my kite from his.

My grandson put up his new delta kite. As he was letting out line he kept asking if the kite was as high as the top of the water tower. Once he was told that it was probably as high as the water tower, he stopped letting out line and wanted it tied off. Seems that flying as high as the water tower was his goal today.

Again, it was a great day ... hope you didn't miss it. If so, try tomorrow since it also promises to be good.

Cheers,
Tom

I missed it. I'll try getting out tomorrow, thanks for the heads up. We've had so much bad weather I didn't even think about it!

It was a beautiful day today .... the winds were up and down, but generally good. My son had a blast. He was excited to put up his new delta that papa got him for Christmas. He achieved his goal of being as high as the water tower. Then he played his other games and watched DVD's in the truck while we flew. He wants to go again tomorrow.

I had a great time, I wondered why my Jeepster was off on the edges all day, I thought he just wasn't as comfortable flying in groups .

I will admit I was all over the sky, but the few tangles we wound up in were caused by him. I mean they must have been considering he did the walk of shame.

It was neat flying during sunset, next time I will have to bring the camera. The temps really dropped off once the sun set, but still a lot of fun.

Oh, Ken, you didn't bet on the Lions again did you?

Day two of winter flying seemed a little colder than yesterday. It was sunny and in the 40's, but the wind was in the high teens all afternoon. The wind chill was a little mean on bare skin. Between the two of us we only have one vented kite, so Jamie had to use his non-vented with both 2- and 3-wrap leading edges installed. That makes for a really stiff combination ... my vented with a 4-wrap leading edge was bending more than his non-vented with a double leading edge. I know the wind was blowing hard, 'cuz every time a gust would come up, off he'd go ... started calling him "Kite Runner" ...

But, it was a fun day, hope you didn't miss the chance to fly a little.

Cheers,
Tom
