Washington, IL ... Flying Site

I met with the Washington Middle School principle today and received permission to use the school grounds for a club fly. She offered to open up the school for bathroom access. She was actually excited about our using the grounds ... wanted to know if she could announce the club fly to the school ahead of time. So, I'd like to offer up Washington as a location for a future club fly. We'll (I'll) have to double check with her before we settle on a date to make sure nothing else is planned.

The school has two ball diamonds on opposite corners and two soccer fields on the remaining corners. There is extra space all around so winds from any direction will work well. I've been flying there off and on for the past couple of months and haven't found any problems.

BTW ... it's been at least 50 years since I've been in the principle's office ... still was strange to be there and not in trouble.

Cheers,
Tom

Okay, since today seemed to be a good day to beg, I also approached the John Bearce auto sales here in Washington. They have an open lot behind their dealership that measures about 600 ft x 540 ft ... approx 7.5 acres. The city of Washington holds their Cherry Festival in this lot. When the grass is mowed it's a great place to fly. Just north of that lot is another lot that is owned by the city that measures about 215 ft x 570 ft ... approx 2.5 acres.

I've used both of these fields off and on all summer and never asked permission, so decided to tackle that part of the task also. When I approached the General Sales Manager he actually knew the colors of my kites ... seems he and the staff have spent time watching me. Said there was no problem flying there ... but, immediately wanted to know how I could make the kite spin and still keep control. Even told me which moves he liked the best. It's funny how excited he was. Then I asked him if I showed up one day with 15 people to fly kites would that be a problem ... he said he'd go get Mr. Bearce to answer that question. The net result is we also have that field to use.

Even though the spy in the sky photo shows lots of buildings around the site, they are all low and don't interfere with winds from any direction. If you check the overhead photo out, the main field has the water tower shadow in it's upper right corner. The cities lot is just across the east-west road by the tower.

There are three businesses boarding the field with restroom facilities.

Cheers,
Tom

Jeff,

Thanks for the spy in the sky picture. I've always used Google Earth, but their pictures of this area of the state are fuzzy. That's why I skipped adding a picture. Now I've got a new tool to search for open flying fields.

Cheers,
Tom

We'll definitely do a club fly there.
Maybe a chilly December or January fly...

I always go to Google first myself, but sometimes the other services have better or more updated pics of certain areas. Now that Google has their own satellite (or a time-share at least) they may update more areas with more data more frequently.

Only a hour or so drive for me. We could put up a few single line's. The car lot location might be the best location to attract future members.

I'm thinking of a having a club fly on Dec 13th.
Jeepster, do you think it should it be at the school or the car dealer?

Let's do it at the car dealership in anticipation of flying some SLKs. Also, John Bearce sounded excited about us flying behind his dealership ... with a good showing, we might be able to create a supporter.

The two ball diamonds at the school yard are fenced in with chain-link ... no problem for multi-lines and smaller SLKs, but might be a concern with large SLKs. In December we can look at it and decide if it's okay for large SLKs. A local church owns approximately seven acres just south of the school yard ... if it looks okay, I'll work on getting permission to combine the two areas and we can fly off both.

Cheers,
Tom

Tony,

Your profile shows several large SLKs that I'd love to see fly ... my 24 sq ft sled now seems like a baby. If we can talk MUX11 into coming from the Quad Cities he can add a large delta to the mix. I know that Backdraft has a large delta. Shawn and Zack both have 3 meter size power kites. It would be neat to see several large kites in the air here in Washington.

At last Sunday's club fly the Rev kites were out numbered with SLKs, dualies and power kites. It was fun to watch ... hope we can do it at the next club fly.

There's a family style restaurant right across from the auto dealership where we're planning on flying. This morning my waitress asked if I was flying yesterday. Seems several customers saw the kite flying around and asked her if she knew what was happening. She knows me and knows that I fly in the dealership's field, so told them what I had told her once before. I'd told her that all my life folks have been telling me to "go fly a kite", so I"m finally following their advice.

Cheers,
Tom
