IKE Retreat?

Postby Mike » Thu, Jun 23 2011, 01:03 PM

Hey Guys & Gals,
what do you thinks of having a weekend of flying and hanging out? Our own IKE retreat / party?
I don't have an idea of where to do this, so I need some help on picking a location.

Here's what I'm thinking:
A hotel for Friday & Saturday, maybe Sunday.
Hotel should be reasonable in cost.
A groovy place to fly nearby. Ideally, within walking distance from the hotel.
Maybe in the Fall, when things aren't crowded?

 I like the idea. The question is . . . how big is the radius to include in that "where" search parameter? I'm in favor of holding the IKE Kite Party '11 on one of our very own (relatively) nearby freshwater coasts. Maybe after the festival season is over but before it's too cold - sort of an end of season fly like last year's October club fly . . . but for a whole weekend.

I don't think "where" is a big worry. A long drive will be rewarded with a weekend of fun. L

I would definitely be interested. And I like the idea of a beach on lake Michigan. But as long as the lodgings were reasonably priced anywhere would work.

Which side of the lake? The prevailing winds in this part of the country are usually from the west to the east. I think that's why Milwaukee so often has poor winds (sorry Jynx!). Though I've had bad winds in Grand Haven too, not near as often as on the other side of the lake. I actually think we might have better winds in a large open area, not necessarily near water. Though water is fun to play in.... hmmm

The best flying I have had, wind wise, was in Grand Haven. But that is a heck of a drive. Anywhere big and open would be good. And water is quite fun to play in. Couldn't stay away from it in Grand Haven. Know anybody with a huge sod farm?

Mikey and I went to the Indiana Dunes State Park. we had a great time flying and the winds were well "winderful" (hi Jynx). There are hotels in the area and camping really close. I have not looked for a hotel on the beach but I can see what we can find. I K E can stand for Indiana Kite Entertainers, well at least for the weekend.

As far as Lake Michigan goes, let me weigh in by saying just about 30 more minutes down the road, Washington Park Beach in Michigan City offers much more to do (zoo, pavilion for bands, large marina, visit-able lighthouse) and has much more room for parking, making it less of a traffic jam to get to and giving us more spectators! Entry is 6 bucks per car, compared to 5 at the State Park. Anytime we go back to the Lake for a getaway, we plan to hit Washington up.

Washinton Park Beach

Had to add an edit since I forgot to mention something late last night. Another minus for the State Park beach, and I don't know if this is common or bad luck for that day, there was lots of black crap in the water like burnt-tree chippings or maybe decomposed plant bits floating in the water that would get all over you near the shoreline. Mikey/Shari do you know what that stuff was?

It isn't lakefront property, but it's huge with ample parking, plenty of "mhotels" in the area, and is centrally located enough to draw fliers from four states; Busse woods in Rolling Meadows/Schaumburg/Arlington Heights, Il. Thirty minute expressway ride to Lake Michigan lakefront. Mike mentioned it earlier as a possibility. Anyone who has flown there, please give us your input.

Has anyone flown both the Dunes/Michigan city *and* Busse Woods? Can you compare?

Reviving this thread. I'm thinking October (which is only two months away!), after most of the festivals are over but before the cold weather sets in for the winter. IKE Party! We need:
Location - big open space with decent hotels nearby for out-of-towners. I know Mike K. like Chicago due to the vast number of Priceline-friendly good hotels. Busse Woods / Ned Brown Meadows is good. Also the Dunes / Michigan parks have been suggested - maybe we could get a group rate at a hotel near there for out-of-towners.
Weekend? Not sure what works for me yet, but I'll look at the kids school schedules & see which weekend(s) might work. I may have to exclude a weekend near my anniversary as my wife is not big on flying kites all day (20th this year, yikes!).
Alternative activities? . . . in case the weather does not cooperate. I'm thinking maybe we plan a kite build in case the weather is bad. If the weather is good, we can save the build for November or December.

I guess we still don't have a comparison between the two places.
We could start working on dates though.
Chicago Kite has a couple small fests the first weekend of October; 180GO! has a small festival the second weekend; so how does the weekend of October 15-16 work for people?

I will have to double check but I believe that weekend is open for us.
I have to say, If I am going to have a little weekend vacation, I would like to have it at a little more exotic of a place than a park in the suburbs. Not that it isn't a great place to fly I am sure. Here is a link from google maps for the exit on I94 by the Dunes entrance. There are quite a few hotels right in the general vicinity.
http://maps.google.com/maps?q=hotel&hl= ... =2.39&z=14

We went on the 4th of July and didn't have a problem finding room to fly, we just had to walk a 150yds down the beach to the north. It is $6 per carload per day to get in.
And the best part, prevailing winds are off the water and silky smooth. Winds you can only find at a beach. Plus it is a beach. It is the kinda of place you are suposto take a vacation too.
Here are a couple pics from the last time we were there.

I'm with Mikey, the Dunes sounds like more fun!
Doing two kite festival weekends in a row might be tough, but I have no actual conflicts that weekend that I know of yet.
