So were you flying in the world record formation Jynx?

Can you post a link to the winning photo?

Hello IKE

WSIKF was really great this year. Here is a link to some photos that Watty (Spence Watson) posted on Facebook. One of the photos is of the fliers with most of their names "tagged".

Yes, Jynx was in the record breaking fly of sixty four on Friday. Once the fliers and kites were organized on the ground, it only took five minutes for all to get in the air and formed into the grid. The fly took several minutes, and then another five or six minutes to get everyone back down without incident.
Rows top to bottom faced opposite directions to "fly through" several times.

Here is a photo of the grid just as the center kites were forming into a ball. After they were formed, several concentric balls were formed around the center kites. The amazing thing was that when the "back to grid" call was given, all kites found their place quickly.

Everyone had a great time.

Here is another photo, taken just after the other one posted above. Kites are getting closer to the "concentric ball" formation.

This was really fun stuff.

The groups of kiters seem to be standing so far apart. Did that make it easier?

Normally, the lines of fliers stand closer together in the grid, however, the manner in which we launched lead to the groups being farther apart

There was a line of 32 downwind, and a line of 32 behind them upwind on the ground. The lines were counted off in fours, 1,2,3,4, in each line. 1s will go to the top the top, 4s will go to the bottom of their grid.

The downwind line launched all eight of the 1s, then 2s etc. Then they got into the grid formation, 2s standing in front and to the right of the 1s, 3s in front and to the left of the 2s, 4s in front and to the right of the 3s.

Then the upwind line launched in the same manner, forming an upwind grid, then walked forward, joining the downwind grid, placing the entire upwind grid of kites above the downwind grid.

This allowed the upwind 1s in each line to see and guide the rest of the fliers in their line to the correct downwind group and get them lined up properly.

That caused the eight lines of fliers to be separated by the distance you see in the photo. We could have moved the lines of fliers closer together, but it was not necessary. Since the grid was disassembled in the reverse order it was formed, it was just as well to not take the last step of moving together. I think that moving closer together might have put the outside lines fliers closer to the edge of the window.

The way it was done worked very well. From the launch of the first line of downwind kites to the launch of the last upwind kites was less than five minutes. Then only a few minutes to move the upwind grid of 32 kites to meet up with the downwind group of 32 kites, about a 150 foot walk done fairly slowly, everyone holding their position in the sky.

Hope this clearly explains how it was done.

Any questions?

I intentionally took the :LogoRevAni: shirt along for the record attempt... Glad I was able to represent the club in good fashion... and not screw-up!

It was an awesome experience!
