I argue that the logical possibility of linguistic meaning, and thus of language as a personal and social good, is afforded by intellectual and motivational empathy, both for self and others. The simplest of instruments, it none the less produces a strong resonance and a variety of different intonations, so that quite subtle results can be obtained. This was a literary construc- tion assembled from genuine folk sources by Friedrich Robert Faehlmann and Friedrich Rheinhold Kreutzwald , and played a role similar to that of the Finnish Kalevala, with which it has many narrative themes in common. The bells are rung to a steady rhythm in carefully ordered, changing sequences.
