2009 AKA Convention. Oct 5-10, Rochester, MN

Postby Mike » Tue, Aug 04 2009, 03:31 PM

2009 AKA National Convention
October 5-10
Rochester, MN
http://www.aka.kite.org/con2009info.shtml

The annual convention rotates from the East Coast, Mid-US and West Coast.
This year it's near us.

It's a place to meet up with the other members of the kiting family from all over the U.S. and even some foreign members.

There's a fly market, a silent auction, a reception, and a couple banquets.

The mornings have free clinics of various sorts. Usually kite making (make a free fighter kite!), how to fly giant kites, and other fun classes.

In the afternoons, there are open fields for free flying, mass ascensions (get free pins for participating!) as well as competitions for National Champions.

You have to be an AKA member to attend the convention. You can register for the convention by clicking on the words "Is Open" on the upper right corner of the AKA Home Page.

Unfortunately, it's always scheduled during the week, so you've got to be retired or have the vacation time to go. But if you can make it, you'll have a good time.

The convention fee doesn't include lodging. Post here if you want to go and you want to share a room. If you don't mind being cozy, you can split a room 4-ways and save $$.

If you want to check out some really beautiful kites, see Steve Ferrel's pictures at the attached URL. Check the bottom of page 22 for Donna's Mustang kite. Way to go Donna!

Cheers,
Tom

Some nice updates on the convention on the Kitelife site: http://www.kitelife.com/magazine/aka09/content.php

There is also a video of Zach Gordon doing an indoor demo. At Two Rivers Big Mike enticed him to come down to the hotel atrium and try his hand for the first time on an indoor Rev. Not bad for one month later :-D

Wow. If he continues to play with it, who knows what he'll be doing a year from now.
I like that fact that it was an uptempo song. I'm so bored with all the slow music, swoopy flying, indoor routines.

That video just proves my point. It's the kite, not the flyer. That's John B's kite that Jach is using.

Tom

Steve's cleaned up his mass uploading of pictures and organized them on this link ...

http://www.kitebuilder.com/competition.htm

And of course, John B has a posting at ...

http://www.kitelife.com/magazine/aka09

I know I shouldn't laugh, but John B's MacBook has picked up a bug and he can't upload for the rest of the weekend ... his post says "Apple's tech support offices are closed on Sat/Sun so my hands are officially tied for the weekend." I'll never watch those Mac/PC commercials the same again.

Cheers,
Tom

Tom, And I thought it was the age thing. Zach, Chris, and even Lauren seemed to have a knack for learning faster than those of us with more "experience" (a nicer word than old) in life.
