2009: PrairieFest, June 21 in Oswego, IL

Postby Mike » Wed, Jun 10 2009, 03:26 PM

Prairiefest runs from June 18-21 in Oswego, IL
Kite flying: June 21, 12:00 to 4:30
http://www.prairiefest.com/

Notice that this is not a kite festival (see the website)

180GO! was invited to fly there last year, and we've been invited again.
Sunday the 21st, from 12:00 to 4:30, we fly in a space outside the main fenced area of exhibits, vendors and music.
It's the same space as the Oswego Earth Day Festival (see the festival link at the top of this page)

The area seems larger this year and I think there's plenty of room for IKE members to fly there if they want.
It would be especially nice to have some SLKs of any size to decorate the sky.

Anyone interested? I need a roll call so I can try to get parking passes for everyone.

They said they would have a sound system, but to be safe, it would be great if you could bring your Fender system.
thanks

I just made my introduction over in the intro area, I first found out about IKE from the Naperville event.

Can I get in on this? The flying, I mean. I've got a 2 meter parafoil that I'd like to be able to take up. But the thing is, Sunday at the Naperville festival was the first time I'd ever flown it, after not flying any kites for many years. I handled it okay, the instincts still work apparently, but that event made me aware that I'd never really flown with many people or other kites around before. I was pleased with how I handled it, I think I have adequate precision, but I don't quite know how to deal with having people in close proximity to me. Other than by being extremely cautious, I guess.

I know I'm late, but I only really tracked down the web site recently and noticed the Oswego event even later. If it's too late for any more parking passes then I can always try to find a spot in the main parking areas. I really don't know how this place is set up, I've never been there before, but Google Earth is giving me a rough idea, and presumably they'll have signs set up to guide drivers on the way in.

Hi Nomad,
this isn't actually a kite festival so there wont be roped off areas. You have to be prepared for the possibility that there may be kids and families wandering around under your lines. I guess I'm saying there may be space for a power kite, there may not be...
If it's not far for you to check out, drop by. I'll be there around 10:30 am.

You mentioned that Champaign was too far for you; we'll have another club fly next month and it will be closer. Probably in Kankakee.
