2009 Grand Haven Kite Festival

Postby DB Cooper » Sun, Mar 22 2009, 01:17 PM

Who is thinking about going to Grand Haven.

I am trying to make it to this festival, but I am unsure of where to stay during it. Do you guys have any recommendations?

If I go, it will only be on Sat... Cannot commit yet..

I can't commit to anything either. If I go, it will also probably be just 1 day.

I'm usually there Friday thru Sunday, leaving on Monday.
There's usually an indoor fly on Friday night.

MIke and Jeff ~

How about getting this one on the IKE calendar... (for us newbies!)

At the State Park in Grand Haven, Michigan
May 16, & 17, 2009

I'm planning to be there, deciding if I want to go up Friday or Saturday, will probably stay at least one night.

Here's a quick rundown of how it usually goes.
The weather can be anywhere from freezing to hot. Really: 32 degrees some years, people laying out on the beach other years.
Check the forecast before a few days before you pack.

Big tent on the beach with lots of kites to buy. No kite auction at this festival.

Friday morning: no public, the most space on the beach to fly and hang out with the manufacturer's reps.
Friday evening: indoor fly.

Saturday: Beach is full if it's warm. Lots of kites in the air, continuous demos in the demo field. Invited fliers attend a dinner at the organizers house. IKE folks go to a restaurant and invite all the other fliers. I've done both and the IKE scene is way more fun.

Sunday: Flying is like Saturday. Some people leave early on Sunday, some folks stay until Monday.

Remember, this is the midwest. One of the days may have lousy wind. It's safest to attend all three days if you can do it. Otherwise, the best way to do it?
If you want to fly with the demo/pro fliers, come on Friday.
The indoor fly has almost been canceled in the past, so it's not guaranteed. If iQuad doesn't go, there probably wont be an indoor fly.

It's more of a spectacle on Saturday and Sunday.

Tragedy ... well, not really just a conflict. I am coaching my son's soccer team and his last game is on May [strike]15[/strike]. I misread, it is that Saturday May 16 at 10:30.

i probably will not be going to any over-night, distant kite festivals this year, due to Marla still having health issues. i will be going to local stuff, though.

Marla is doing better; but she is still on enteral feeding exclusively and still has significant neck pain.
