2008 Festival Schedule

Postby Mike » Tue, Sep 25 2007, 10:39 AM

******* Edit 3/24/08 **********
I'll no longer be keeping this post up-to-date.
Go to the IKElopedia (click at the link at the top of the page) for better information.
Also, see the individual listings for each festival in the forum
****************************

Here's some of the dates I've received for upcoming 2008 festivals.
I'll update the list and add more info as it comes in.
Chicago Kite usually has some Chicago area festivals that aren't here yet. Oswego? Woodridge? We'll see, there's still plenty of time.

Some of these are minor festivals and some will have lots of IKE members in attendance.
We'll discuss which festivals we want to send a lot of IKE folks to next year. For now, this is just a heads up.

Grinnell is an example of a new festival for most of us. They changed the date to make it easier for us to attend this year, and they've gotten sponsors to get even more hotel rooms than last year. But, more on that later on.

I added them to the list.
Is is just May 3rd this year? I thought it was 2 days last year.

Does anyone have contact info for Galesburg? This one is usually early May too.

While we will attend many of these festivals, and we will have plenty of discussion later, here's some that I've been to and have enjoyed:

April 5 - 6, Airwaves
Cincinnati, OH
The Airwaves people treated us so very well last year. Even though they got rained out the first day, it was a blast. They set up an indoor area for us and brought in games for us to play and they brought in food for lunch and a catered dinner. We flew more the second day.
This festival gets 10,000 -20,000 people attending (when it's not raining)

April ?: Decatur
This is a new festival last year. It has great potential. A lot of people showed up last year and the organizer is dedicated to getting more sponsorships and making it grow and grow. Tons of space.

May 10, Kites over Grinnell
Grinnell, IA. (Rain date May 11)
It seems the whole town supports this one. I think every business in town had a sign. A lot of SLKs. Room for growth in the sport kite area, and we're the ones to make it happen.

May 16-18, Great Lakes Kite Festival
Grand Haven, MI
No brainer. This is the biggest festival in the Midwest.

May 31 - June 1
Pontiac
A new festival that deserves all our support. Ellie and her husband were great, and the mayor loved us.

May 24 & 25 ..TWC Family Kite Festival
Milwaukee..Veterans Park
A big festival. It can be difficult for sport kiters to find a place to fly sometimes, but it's still a lot of fun.

June 7-8
Naperville
Corrinne always treats the kiters well, and the fest grows every year. Huge park with tons of room. Last year we flew to live music.

Labor Day weekend? Two Rivers Kite Festival in Two Rivers, WI
Like a smaller version of Grand Haven. Nice beach and friendly folks. Only festival I've been to where everyone I met, at the hotel or wherever, had been to the festival. IKE even had locals on the sidelines who became groupies.

Sept 13 & 14 TWC Frank Mots Int'l Kite Festival
Milwaukee..Veterans Park
iQuad has been invited back. How about iQuad and our team flying together? Too cool!

DeKalb.
It might be two days this year! We all go to this one, no discussion needed.

Don't forget about Nationals! You don't have to be a competitor to enjoy one of the best and most exciting festivals of the year! (Of course, it wouldn't hurt!) And you don't have to be a sport kite competitor, either. There is kite making, fighter kites and Rok battling! Next year will be the first year that Multiline Pairs is a sanctioned discipline at Nationals! (I think some of you fly quad... :-) )

It's a wonderful place to meet folks from all over the country, attend great workshops and hang with like-minded people. The auction (loud and silent) offers some very cool merchandise and is a great fund-raiser for the AKA. Not to mention that Gettysburg is wonderfully loaded with some of the most amazing parts of our U.S. history.

Anyway, it will be the seventh Nationals our family has attended and they all have been just great!

I didn't forget, it is a fun party. But it's hard for most of us to attend. You have to be able to take a week off and spend money on hotel and airfare.
I was concentrating on Midwest festivals. I didn't mention Kite Party or WSIKF either. :-D
(I've never been to WSIKF, but it's one I want to go to)

Me too. I've almost gone a couple times. Wildwood is another classic I haven't been to.
Maybe we can work out some IKE group travel next year. Share a rental car and hotel rooms, maybe a road trip back East.
I know, we get 50 people to go and we charter a plane! :-D

Don't forget Larry Day's event in Clear Lake, IA I have it down as Feb 17, not sure where I got that date.
Also Toby's ice fly, no date there.

I am a little less enthusiastic about Decatur. The big kite fliers are on their own field seperated from the rest of the festival. I for one did not feel a part of that festival. The alfalfa filed is not great as I understand that at some point in its development it will stain kites green. I don't know how close or far we were from this stage. The power or whatever it was that broke up the other field makes it unworkable. So I don't know what I will do next year, it is a lot of work not to be a part of the festival.

Yes, I know that isolation is a price often associated with big kites, I just don't have to like it.

How about BigKiteGuy making a super kite and fly us all there?

I can't speak for the other fliers of course, but some of the folks who flew demos this year would likely be at Mots instead: Mike Delfar, Dan Newman, Elizabeth Gordon off the top of my head. Not to mention the difficulty of choosing iQuad or DeKalb for many of the quad fliers in the club.

That's this coming weekend. It's a good example of an IKE road trip possibility for next year. My mini-van seats 7...

Mots has been the weekend after Labor day and DeKalb 2 weeks after. Is the date for Mots08 correct?

It's a good problem to have! To have so many festivals going on that we have to be selective.

Truth is that there are contigencies, to take into consideration ,in each town that has a festival. It's not always possible, to work around every schedule that might effect it.

The Mots date is correct. It's (edit:[strike]usually[/strike]) always the second weekend in Sept.
It's a problem in 2008, because of when Labor Day falls. It shouldn't be a problem in 2009.

In the Midwest, there is a limited pool of kiters who perform. If there is a conflict between two festivals, the major festival, with greater funding, will usually attract most of the area fliers. I fear this may hurt DeKalb, which is a shame, since DeKalb has just been getting more and more fun.

I understand that you have to work with DeKalb's calendar as well. When will you be sure of the DeKalb Festival date?
I hope that we aren't forced to choose, and that something can be worked out between these two fine festivals.
