2008 Kite Party - Feb 22-24 - Huntington Beach, CA

Postby Jeff » Tue, Jul 10 2007, 10:38 AM

Does anyone know yet the exact date for this? (Edited to add dates.)

I may be able to go. My wife has family in the L.A. area, and we have a good amount of frequent flyer miles to use toward a vacation. She'd like to visit her aunt, and to combine it with Kite Party would work out great. It would sure be a welcome break, come February.

Dave Shenkman just posted.
It's the last weekend in Feb., which would Feb 22-24.

If it's like last year, there will be lots of Rev fliers and we'll get to meet up with our West Coast members!
Aint that right, Jim Foster?

I'd like to go to this too. I have a g/f in LA, I'll have to talk to her, maybe she can let 1 -2 people stay. Bad news is she does foster care for cats, has over 20 of them. So if you aren't allergic to cats and can tolerate the smell.....

What part of LA is it in?

I know its still a little aways off, but I am trying to start figuring out when I will be going down. There has been a little talk about all us IKE members showing up at Rev's door step for a tour and what ever else may arise.

So my ? is who is going and when are you planning on going?

I will be looking for a room mate to help off set the costs of hotel/car for the time out there. PM me if you are interested in sharing costs.

Roll Call!
I am definitely going. I'll be staying with Fern's folks.
I'll probably be there for the week, and on the beach from Wed thru Sunday, flying home on Monday.
Most folks show up on the weekend, some on Friday, less on Thursday.
I propose the pilgrimage to Rev for Wed or Thu.

If you can take the time off, a red-eye out Tues after work and back home on Monday.
A minimum trip would be to fly out Thu, and a late flight home on Sunday. (I'd skip a trip to Revolution in that case)

One could also fly into San Diego airport on a morning flight, with the time difference (it's two hours earlier in California) you would land before noon.
The drive from San Diego airport to Rev is probably about 30 minutes.
Then drive from Rev to Huntington Beach. Probably about 1 hour 45 minutes drive?
Fly home out of Los Angeles (LAX) or Orange County (SNA).

I've found Kayak.com is a good place to look for flights. You can choose to have it search multiple airports and several dates at one time.
Also check Southwest Airlines directly which doesn't show up on price search sites.
Right now, the lowest prices seem to be a $240 (including tax) flight on Frontier Airlines with a stop in Denver. Though I would have some concern with weather-caused flight delays flying thru both Chicago and Denver.

I not sure whether it would be wednesday night or thursday morning I would be flying out and coming back on monday. Doing the trip from tuesday would be a little to hard to do. Being a newbie to flying, I would want to do a nonstop to and from. No layovers.:?

Thanks for the info on hunting for airfares and airports Mike.

From time to time I am going to post photos from past Kite Parties.
Not that I want anyone to get excited about coming, no, I wouldn't do such a thing.

Or would I?

Enjoy, Jim

I almost always use Frontier when travelling west. (So if you get on the Thurs a.m. flight for KP, you'll likely be on the same flight with me out of Denver!) I like to get on the 6:30 a.m. out of St Louis, quick connection in Denver, and you arrive in Orange County by 9:30. The connection in Denver is easy; all of Frontier's gates are right together in a cluster. I do worry about the weather at that time of year, but Denver is quite good about keeping the runways clear, unless it is actively storming. One tip if you do use Frontier, though: they don't run many flights a day (like, 3 or 4 to each destination outside Denver). Don't be scheduled on the last one, because if your original flight gets delayed you get to spend the night in the airport (or an airport hotel) with no chance of catching another flight until the next morning. I caught a connection by 5 mins once when Kansas City was shut down due to snow, and my first flight was very late.

Can't wait for KP!!!
