The weather can be quite cold in the morning, for example, and then get rather warm later on in the day; be prepared for both. Winds can change abruptly.

For dualie kites, you may want to put electrical tape, for example, around your kite leg material and the end caps; sand gets into kites and stuff very easily and can alter performance. (It's not magic sand that will turn you into a better flier; if it was, i'd bring tons of it home in jars.)

You'll be bringing tons of sand home (though probably not in jars). Your home will become a temporary Grand Haven.

My Smileys are listed as "On", but i continue to have a blank field of Smileys to choose from... what gives? :(

Hi Mike,
This is Jillynne from the P.I.G.S.
I was in Chicago for our Airwaves this year, so I missed seeing everyone.
I will however be in Grand Haven, although with the weather report... I'm kinda having second thoughts.
I bought a quad and have never flown it so I was hoping to get a lot of practice and tips from flyers, but I really dislike being cold... what to do, what to do.
I had also planned to bring my daughter and her girlfriend thinking they could walk around town siteseeing and stuff.
thoughts anyone?

thanks,
Jillynne

Hi Jillynne!
Great to hear from you!

The weather for Grand Haven looks to be a bit chilly and maybe a little rain here or there. It's basically the same forecast we had for Grinnell last weekend. At Grinnell it rained in the early morning and at night, but we had good weather during the festival hours. So ya never know.

Grand Haven is a cute little town and is setup for walking or biking. There's sidewalk all the way from the beach to the downtown area.

I'll be flying, rain or shine, with a team called iQuad. I'll have some time for lessons but not as much as we had at Airwaves. Ken will be at Grand Haven too, and he'll have more time to give lessons. Revolution will probably have a demo area there, just for giving lessons. So we'll make sure you don't leave Grand Haven without learning to fly your kite!

Hi Jillynne
Glad to see you popping in too. As Mike said I would be more then happy to give you lessons with flying your quad. As far as the weather goes never believe the weather men!! We have had all weather conditions through out the weekend in the past, from cold and 30 mph winds, to warm and 10 mph winds, to so warm and no wind the beach had a line to get into the parking lot to enjoy the water. So pack up and make the trip down, we will make it worth your while. Just hanging out with everybody is always fun too. Also I have a vented to use if you have a SUL, or a SUL if you have the vented. So we got you covered either way.

The girls will love downtown Grand Haven too. Nice little town and shops.
So quite humming and hawing about it. Just DO IT! :mrblue:

Well friday has come to an end for the most part. (drinky drinky) We started out with rather light winds in the morning and as the day progressed so did the winds. We were able to to get a small mega fly in at the end of the day with iQuad, even Mike S. joined in, and he did just fine in the mix. There was a total of eight fliers out there.
I had a chance to help a few newbie learn the ropes in the basic flying, what a GREAT feeling that is! Which Jillynne happened to be one of them, really glad she decided to make the trip out here, which now I think she is too.
We might have a little stronger winds tomorrow then todays were, but I believe there will be a good crowd to go with them.
Cannot wait to hit the bed and the morning to arrive only to do it all over again for two and and half days!
Any body heading out this way in the morning have a save drive and see you all out on the beach.

Today, Friday, was a blast at Grand Haven. After the lull in the morning, the winds were ideal; i couldn't believe how cool the tricking was for my Sea Devils!

The indoor fly was very cool!

i thought that the 8 man mini-mega fly looked very nice! After the winds picked up, it was still a lot of fun to be tricking my dualie in the masses of quad fliers that are exponentially taking over the whole planet.

Mike S., while we were all in the hotel pool, was observed, through the windows facing the hotel lobby, to be indoctrinating little children to the splendor of the Dark Side. i anxiously watched... and later popped in to warn the innocent l, little children. They were mesmerized by Mile's long lecture though. We had a great time in the pool and encouraged some adults to come out to the festival!

Saturday: the forecast for 30 mph winds and rain turned out to be..... wrong, of course.
Great winds and sunny all day.

Had a larger mega-fly on Saturday, 15 kites, including Bean and Nick Stephenson, Ken and Isaac, some guys from the Windjammers(!), and Lee Sedgwick (sp?).

In other news, the newest iQuad alternate is:
Drum roll please.....
Nick Stephenson!

Nick flew with iQuad for the official demos all day on Saturday and was outstanding.
Zach Gordon flew with iQuad all day on Friday and was also fantastic. I wouldn't be surprised if he becomes an official alternate as well.

I think this weekends demos are among the best iQuad has flown with a 6-kite team. Thanks Zach and Nick!

With the additional iQuad experience we'll be bringing back, 180GO! should really benefit. I can't wait until the next 180GO! fly in a couple weeks. After next weekend, 180GO! will be flying 3 weekends in a row! (Pontiac, Naperville, PrairieFest).

Yes the weathermen were once again wrong, they only one day off with the winds. For today the winds were in the steady 20s with gusts reaching up in THIRTY SIX mph. Nobody was brave enough to do anything but iQuad and I (for I flew with them too) We were even filmed for the ten o clock news too. Man what a blast it was to be able to fly once again with iQuad even more so in such HIGH winds. Looking forwards to the next chance to fly with them again!

Yesterday was such a blast, weather was good all around. It was alittle on the cool side but good winds all day long. The crowds were entertained all day long with all the demos going on. Yes our newest celb of the fourm did great. Nce going Nick!! I myself had helped four/five newbies get their stuff squared away and showing them the basics through out the day. Mike S. and I were even able to give Ben from Rev. a chance to take a breather for awhile with taking over with giving lessons. What a great feeling it is seeing those smiling faces.

At the end of the day there were about twenty of us that got together for a nice sit down dinner at a local resturant. Asalways what a great time was had by ALL!! Way too many names to type out, but I would just like to say :thanks: for coming out and helping me put a very enjoyable end to a great day of flying!

and so as another fun filled fest comes to an end, I know there are a lot of flier looking forward to next year all ready. Weather it be a first timer or a seasoned veteran like myself!! 8)

iQuad has been invited back for next year, so all you newbie Rev fliers, practice your hover for next time!

Besides the Rev flying, Al Sparling and David Gomberg put up some cool big stuff, including the new and improved crab.

The SLKs and fighter kite guys were there, and some dualie fliers, but we were missing folks like Dodd Gross and Mark Reed.

This festival is really one you don't want to miss. Thanks to all for a great time.

Grand Haven was great. Great flying with IQuad and others. Thanks IQuad for letting me fly with you guys!! Hopefully next year the winds die down some though. Little too windy but it was still a blast to fly in.

The weather was very nice Friday and Saturday (and even Monday morning to an extent)! Friday's weather was extremely nice... the best i've ever flown in (on late Friday morning)! The winds were extremely smooth and exceptionally steady! i mostly flew my black Sea Devil dual line kites, as usual.

We carried on with our usual verbal sparring (between myself and the quadaddict guys). i did receive some payback physically  though, by way of cannon balls in the hotel pool (being directed my way) and via strangulation by way of quad lines while i was flying my beloved dual kite. When the AKA hears about this, there definitely will be some pilot licenses pulled and/or incarceration in cells containing dualies. :mrblue:

Actually, i am very appreciative of the quad fliers! They all fly together, congested in one big conglomeration at all of the kite flys and festivals... so there is more room for me to fly! If all of you were dualie guys, we'd be cluttering up the flying spaces and it would be insane! So i appreciate all of you being quaders! The more quadrophiles the merrier! (Anyway, the universe naturally contains more darkness than light; there is a lot more darkness and dark energy as well as dark matter; the illuminated light is very rare and uncommon! That is the natural order of things.) So, the Dark Side, being what it is, is (i've discovered) a necessary extension of the macrocosm. It leaves more room for me to fly and to do my thing! Thank you, Dark Siders... oh, vast darkness!

The Damon's resaurant thing was a lot of fun, with a lot of us getting together and chatting, Saturday night! The next day dinner thing was great too! Ben (Darth Vader) is a real character!

The whole thing was a lot of fun!

from T. S. Eliot:

O dark dark dark. They all go into the dark,
The vacant interstellar spaces, the vacant into the vacant,
The captains, merchant bankers, eminent men of letters,
The generous patrons of art, the statesmen and the rulers,
Distinguished civil servants, chairmen of many committees,
Industrial lords and petty contractors, all go into the dark...

(Sure seems like that's where most of them are going alright!)

It was great to see you and your Mom again, Nathan.
Maybe you'll make it out to one of our other fests this year?
