2008: May 16-18, Great Lakes Kite Festival. Grand Haven, MI

Postby Mike » Sat, Mar 22 2008, 04:44 PM

The Great Lakes Kite Festival in Grand Haven, MI is the biggest festival in the Midwest.
You have to go to this one. The weather can be warm and sunny and sometimes it can be cold, but there's always a bunch of kiters there.

It starts out lightly on Friday. On Friday, you'll have plenty of beach to to fly in. On this day it is easiest to be able to fly with and get tips from the "pros." Though you can do that on the weekends too.

Friday night has an indoor fly where you can see some fine indoor flying performances.

Saturday and Sunday are the big days with the most fliers and the most public.

Prism and Revolution usually have demo fields where you can play with their toys.

(The following was posted, by me, in another section until Mike asked me to move it here. i moved it! :!: )

i'm starting to get Grandhavenitis. Instead of counting sheep when you can't sleep... it's kites (of all kinds and colors).

Thinking about car pooling and hotel rooms. IKEers going that way should make plans soon. i'm thinking of checking in on Friday the 16th... and checking out (not permanently) Monday the 19th. Get in touch if you are going around those times.

Ken, send me a PM.

This is a very sweet event, with tons of impressive kites, spectacular quad line and dual line flying, single line wonders and awesome sandy beaches with a lot of people there participating and enjoying everything with passion. Definitely a Kodak event!

(P.S.- i couldn't post this topic in the Kite Festivals section... as i am not an administrator... i was too busy taunting the quad folks on the day the club was started. i did get the job done, however.)

Hotels fill up real fast in Grand Haven. It's a good idea to book now (most rooms are refundable if you change your plans)

There weren't anymore rooms available at the Blue Water Inn right across the street from the beach and we didn't feel the need for a Suite outside of downtown Grand Haven. Our room is reserved and paid for, so now we just need to save for gas and make sure the Volvo is ready for the trip. I'd like to make it to the indoor fly this year. I'm guessing everyone meets up at the beach beforehand? The last few years we haven't gotten into town till late in the evening on Friday.

EDIT: Correction we aren't staying at the Best Western but rather the Days Inn. :|

Ken and i are also staying at the Best Western, as well as Backdraft and his family. Yes, the Bluewater Inn was already booked up when i checked a good while back.

A lot of people will be on the beach throughout the day on Friday. Ken and i will be there on Friday. The indoor is always later in the evening... and is pretty cool; i'll have my video camera going.

Looking forward to seeing you again there, Chris. It's a lot of great fun... and is a superb place to fly!... an absolutely cool festival! 8) :mrblue:

Well, I just found out that Grand Haven will be out for me this year. The only time our family can get together for our May b-days (mine and Elie's) is the weekend of the 17th and there is no getting out of it.

I am most likely out for GH too.

With the consecutive festival weekends, it's a bit much for the family. If I went to GH, it would be 5 straight weekends.
Keep calm, and park it in the pocket

IKE is on Image too!

I'm a maybe for this one. Haven't booked anything.

I have a business trip to Brazil (!) the week before, and my return flight is supposed to get back the Friday morning before Grand Haven.
My attendance depends on (1) not getting delayed and/or missing a connection somewhere and (2) being awake enough to drive that far after spending the previous night in an airplane!

Donna,
I'd have offered you a ride from my area except that I'm heading up there on Thursday.

My plan is to be there Thursday night, ready to fly (with iQuad) on Friday morning.
When is everyone else heading up there?

Hey folks,
Between stuff happening here and gas, I won't be making it this year. I'll miss flying with you but will hopefully find my way to a smaller event over the summer. Enjoy!

We are leavening Thursday after the kids get out of school 4:00ish, looking forward to see everyone. This is our first time in Grand Haven should be fun. Any thing we need to know?

Things to know:

The weather can hot, the weather can be freezing.
The beach can get crowded, especially in good weather. Get there early each day to stake out a spot. I normally setup near Revolution's demo field and fly between the end of their field and the lake.

Friday is not crowded. It's the best day to hang out with the manufacturers reps and the big name fliers.

Friday night is the indoor fly. It's quality varies widely. It depends on who's there this year.

Parking is free on the street, but you have to get there early (which you will anyway)

The night fly (on Saturday) usually has a decent turnout.

anyone else have anything to add?
