2008: May 3, Mayor Daley's Kids and Kites. Chicago

Postby Mike » Tue, Mar 18 2008, 02:17 PM

Mayor Daley's Kids and Kites
May 3, 10am-3pm. At the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago.

This is a blast for watching the public fly. Imagine thousands of kids running around with kites they just made themselves. It's total chaos and a hoot. They've got a an organized system for kids to pick up their kite skin, then decorate, then finish it off with string. After that, it's every kid for himself.

The wind has to be just right and blow between the buildings to be able to fly. And there's a lot of cotton line to watch out for.
There is room to fly down on the beach, but the public is largely up by the museum.

If you live on the west side of the state, Kites Over Lake Storey might be the one to go to. It's also a good one if you want to have room to fly.

But if you live closer to the lake, or want to take a picnic and watch the fun, you should check this one out. I enjoy watching all the happy families and I'm willing to take a chance with my kite.

I won't be able to make either of the May 3rd festivals this year, but thought I would share a few photos.
We're in the process of setting up another area for photos, but until it's up and running, here's some photos from a couple years ago:

Lots of kites! If you look closely, you'll see several Revs, grounded, from the Superblast on the left to the stack on the right.

I thought Hector might like this kite. I met this fellow there but haven't heard from him again.

Kids running everywhere!

i think i may try to make this one, for the day, since it is close by. It was a lot of fun on the beach last year. Flying adjacent to the museum was not very feasible with dualies... due to the large crowds around the museum area.

I'll be at Governor's State University.
It's a great satisfaction knowing that for a brief point in time you made a difference.

Well another one in the history books

Despite the weather predictions we still had 3000 people out and flying winds were
good most of the day Thanks Bob R, Greg , Mike H , And Kathy for putting on a great show of kites

Thanks
David
