2008: April 5-6, Airwaves Kite Festival, West Chester, Ohio

Postby Mike » Mon, Mar 17 2008, 06:40 PM

I don't think it's called "Airwaves" anymore, but it's easier to say than "The Otto M. Budig Family Foundation Kite Fest"

http://www.wguc.org/kitefest/
West Chester is just north of Cincinnati.

This festival had 10,000 people it's first year, 20,000 the second year, the third year got rained out.
If I've counted right, this is the 4th year.

The park where this fest is held has an amazing amount of room. Even with 20,000 people there's plenty of room to fly. They also have a dedicated field set aside for AKA members where you can fly your fancy kites without fear of cotton line.

Chicago Fire will be there and you can also cheer on our own team, :Logo180GO!:

The host club, P.I.G.S. Aloft, is a really great group of people. Ken and I had a lot fun there even the year it got rained out. They set us up in a big room and brought in cards, games and food to keep us entertained. It was a party!

I hope to see some IKE folks come out to this one. It's great when our club gets to talk to another club. You get to share ideas and see how other clubs operate. P.I.G.S works quite differently from us. You also get to see new kites and ideas at other festivals that may inspire you.

If you can't make it to this one though, try to attend the Fun Fly in Glenview on the Saturday (see separate listing). It's closer, especially if you live close to Chicago.

Either way, be sure to post here or at the Glenview post if you plan on attending either of these.

One of the best things about being involved with kiting and IKE, is that my family and I get to meet great people and groups from all across the country and world. We are looking forward to going to Ohio and meeting everyone, seeing old friends and making new ones. Hope to see a lot of red shirts it sure looks great at a festival and makes for a lot of fun.

See you all there,

Mike S. :LogoRevAni:

Yes Mike I think your count is correct. This will be the fourth year for the fest. Will be my second year going. This time around my wife will not be accompanying me. With the lousy weather we had the first day last year, P.I.G.S. aloft made us IKErs feel VERY welcome with inviting us in to the warm and dry building to shoot the breeze and learn a few new card games. GREAT bunch of people!! Looking forward to filling their skies with our kites again this year and many more to come.

My TomTom has the route from the Dayton airport to Airwaves ready to go.

See you on the field tomorrow.

Have a safe trip everybody.

Hey Mike, could you bring an extra chair? I won't be able to bring one. Thanks.

The family and I had a really great time this weekend. This was a really nice festival with alot of people. They treated us very nicely and we had alot of fun. Had a GREAT time with everyone.

180 Go! looked great. Alot of great comments from people in the crowd and from other flyers. Mike, Ken, Isaac, Nick, Zack G, and the Bean did a great job on their debut run without a glitch. They all interacted well with the crowd and the crowd enjoyed them, and therefore generated alot of comments and questions to us regarding the team and kites.

You guys looked SUPER!

Congrats on your Debut!

Mike

This was a great event and very well planned. It was really nice that 180Go! had their own PA system. I really liked that they had a map of the event that hey were handing the map out as people entered.

Was nice to see the SUN!

What a GREAT time and a bunch of people Airwaves fest is!!! Already looking forwards to next year. The team was really looking good!! The two demo we did were a BLAST after the knees stopped knocking. Sundays winds were very trying at times!!! and not to worry Issac, the wind gods did not take you as a sacrifice this time. The winds stayed crappy the rest of the day after you had left.

and I just loved the wind sock we put on to Tom's RAINBOW banner. :rotfl :rotfl

The Airwaves Festival was truly a lot of great fun! :mrblue: Great people, great flying, mostly great weather, great kites, great wind socks!

Those PIGS ALOFT people are really something to admire; very dedicated kite enthusiasts who go one step farther. They were more than hospitable and were as sweet as can be! What a cool group of fliers!
i definitely want to go to this one again! Wow! What a place! It was very organized; every kiting event should be this perfect... but can't be!

i truly felt like i was one of the Pigs Aloft people... especially when i returned home with pounds of mud attached to my clothes! :mrblue: It was a squealin' good time!
