[edited 3/13/08]
This falls on the same date as one of our biggest local festivals -- Mots.
Unfortunately, [strike]the Overmans couldn't get it on another date[/strike] the Chamber of Commerce chose this date.

People who have never been to a big festival should really try to go to Mots. You could even do Saturday at Mots and Sunday at DeKalb (what's a few more miles on the car!). The big festivals offer an experience that is quite different from our smaller Illinois festivals. I think it helps the club if everyone has been to a bigger festival. You can bring back the enthusiasm and ideas to use at our festivals here in Illinois. Mots treated IKE members well last year and you will be welcome there again.

However, many IKE fliers have been to Mots before and you should think about doing DeKalb this year instead.
Many of the demo/pro fliers that were at DeKalb last year will be at Mots this year, so it would be nice if we can fill out the ranks for DeKalb with some IKE people.
Quad fliers will have a chance to fly with iQuad at Grand Haven. Maybe you can skip flying with them at Mots.

DeKalb is a huge field with lots of room to fly.
DeKalb has the advantage over Mots in that it is more relaxed. Great if you haven't done a lot of demos.
DeKalb is closer for most IKE fliers.
[strike]Most important: DeKalb is put on by our own Draftnik, so by going there you are supporting one of our own![/strike] It's now run by Chicago Kite.

I already have a commitment to fly at Mots, but if it should change, I'll come to DeKalb.

hopefully, next year we wont have to choose between these two--tell the DeKalb alderman when you see them at the festival!

I'll be at DeKalb this year!
It's a great satisfaction knowing that for a brief point in time you made a difference.

That's right Chicago Kite's the contact on this. This festival has grown the last two years and we're no longer involved with the planning. The Chamber was well informed on all other area festivals. The choice was made because it's the best date for the local community. A good priority given recent events here.

My job for the festival this year is to collect bios from the kiters. If you're flying at this please email one to me. These will be used in the sound booth primarily. THey may hand copies of them off to the media as a who's-who at the festival as well.

Please don't be shy about sending these along. They will be great appreciated.

Would be far safer to write your own, then to have me make something up!

Thanks much. I'm greatly looking foward to this event!

How about a roll call of who is going to this festival?

Unfortunately, there's two festivals on the same day and I'll be at the Mots festival.

I'd appreciate someone posting a report and photos of this festival after it's over.
It's nice to have in the archives.

Good winds!

I've got grandkid number two's first birthday this weekend. It's not in my best interest to miss it, so will not make any of the festivals this weekend.

I'll be going on Sunday...

Saturdays for anything for me are out for the future at this point... just too difficult to arrange and I cannot afford to spend an entire weekend playing when there is so much to 'take care of' at home...lol

I'll be there and I'm sooo looking foward to it. Might even get to fly this year, which will be mondo cool and very much needed.

Please, please send me your bios if you're coming. I will cut loose with some creative thoughts of my own if you don't. I highly advise against letting that happen. I've gotten a few already and thank you much to those who sent them. There some that aren't in yet and they would be greatly appreciated.

If it helps at all here's the bare bones of what I'd like to have...

Name
Location
Kites you will likely fly and a bit about them if you like
What do you enjoy most about kiting?
(A list of any music you'd like to fly to might come in handy.)

New to kites. Dekalb is pretty close and I would like to see what a festival is like. All I have is power kites, but I think I will bring 2 or 3 of the smallest kites I have. Hoping for wind...

DeKalb is a good example of a small festival. One of the largest festivals in the Midwest is the same weekend in Milwaukee (the Mots festival). That's why club members are split between the two festivals. To experience a big festival, try to make Mots or the Grand Haven,MI festival next year.

However, you should have plenty of room at DeKalb to fly.

Be sure to introduce yourself to an IKE member. You can't miss them, they'll be wearing a red shirt. Get one of them to give you some flying time on a dual and quad line sport kite. They're very different from the power kites.
