2008: April 26-27, Decatur Kite Festival in Decatur, IL

Decatur Kite Festival
Sat and Sun, April 26-27, 2008

Map

This two-day festival is held on a huge field near Richland Community College.
This is where the annual Farm Progress Show is held so it has modern bathrooms with indoor plumbing--no outhouses.
The field has power boxes set up every couple hundred feet which are easily worked around. There is have plenty of room for SLKs to fly without tangling, and plenty of space for sport kites.

They'll also have a display of printing plates and memorabilia from Hi-Flier kites. If you're old enough, you'll remember those 15 cent paper and stick Diamond kites you used to buy. Decatur was where they were made.

Unfortunately, I'll be missing this one. I really enjoyed last years festival.

:Logo180GO!: will be there, flying under co-captain Babbman.

Decatur is going to have a sound system and music for you guys to do demos.
For those who were there last year, they are looking into mowing the alfalfa field to make it easier for the big kites and maybe even put a demo field out there.

Tom, I hope you'll demo for us.
Ken, Babbman, you guys can do individual demos in addition to the team stuff.
Chris R., are you coming again? You've got a whole bag of tricks you pull out for demos. I hope you can come.

Anyone want to come and put up some SLKs, how about a candy drop? We need more kites to fill the sky.
Draftnik? Drachenschwanz?

Who else wants to come?

Please post here, PM, or email me in the next week.
I want to be able to tell the organizer what the club is bringing and I'll work on hotel rooms too.

I'll be there both days. Demos for dual and quad. Any word on rooms?

Once again, I didn't read the last sentence of the post I am responding to.....
It's a great satisfaction knowing that for a brief point in time you made a difference.

Ann and I will be there for sure, but would mowing the field make even more stuble? We will be selling kites as well, and the Wilsons are coming also.

I guess it depends on where the crop is in it's growth cycle. There's something about getting a crop out of there every other year. I dunno for sure.

It's coming up this weekend.

Next year, it will be the same weekend, but it will be in a new and much improved location.
There's a great 57 acre grass field just east of the campus.

That should give more room for teams and allow all the kiters to be in the same area.

The forecast for this weekend is warm, sunny and 10 mph wind.
Enjoy the weekend everyone!

Music for team flying...

Is anybody able to bring a boom box or other means of sound? I have not been able to get my radio to work with both channels. :x I think the radio may have played for the last time on that last rainy practice day. I will have my jukebox with either way. I now have RCA plug to mini plug and mini to mini plug.

Hey...just wanted to let everyone know that we are at the Decatur Kite Fest and had rip roarin winds 12-26 mph. Gusty but able to fly. It's a beautiful day though...Sunny but cooler. Looking forward to flying tomorrow. Come on out if you get a chance.

Sounds fine to me. We had 20-30 mph here. And terribly gusty. Very difficult to fly in. I can't imagine team flying in what we had today.
Keep calm, and park it in the pocket

We got some team flying in but it was just a little much in the wind department..

Decatur is in the can.

Nice festival, interesting winds. Yesterday blowing hard, today varying and shifting a bit. We flew team as well as individually. I definitely need more practice in calling, just so I can coordinate the walking/flying/thinking/talking thing. There's a lot to do and you gotta give Mike credit for being able to do it so well.

I did 2 radio interviews, talked with the Hearald & Review paper and there seemed to be a TV crew out there today so we got some pretty good exposure..

i had a great time! i think that we were relatively lucky regarding the weather!

Thanks very much, Paul! It was a lot of fun!

Quad kites were hitting me a lot on the top of my hat... and i was getting splashed a lot by quad fliers while in the pool, disrupting my tranquility there too! (This behavior, i feel, i received undeservedly... as i have never done or said anying negative regarding the Dark Side. Ok, maybe i said a thing or two in the past!) Not to worry... next time, i'll have scissors or a lighter and will remove a couple of lines from each kite if they come near me!

Well, i'm back to low speed internet... as the high speed thing crashed once again! It's another thing happening to me undeservedly today!

Brother!
