Help 180GO! design our team kites

Postby Mike » Wed, Feb 26 2014, 08:45 AM

Hey all,
the team is considering flying the NYM kites, so we need a new design.
Our team flying styles requires that we have kites that are mostly red, and mostly black. When we fly I want the audience to see, for example, a line of red kites flying over a line of black kites. Look at some of the videos on at http://180go.com to see what I mean.

Here's a quick play with Swannie's drawing (thanks Swannie!).
Click here to get the drawing: viewtopic.php?f=8&t=2410#p24377

In #3, I like the red arrow that has a mini white rev above it, but I also like the more solidly red and black of #2.

Feedback and design ideas are much appreciated!

I like #3 the best, I think. I didn't notice the mini-rev until you pointed it out!

They all look a little busy compared to our current kites, though. Here's a few more ideas:

#5:

#6:

I think I'm partial to #6 at the moment, even though it's plain.

I like #5, but I could talked into #6 pretty easily.

Alright, after looking at it a bit more I now like 6 better :)
I think the white squares work with the grey panels better.

What about having an asymmetrical layout, mostly red/black on the right and the left side has white mixed in to get something sort of like the current team kites.

Or edit #6 to have a black center v panel in the red kite and a red center v panel in the black kite

I guess my boredom at work was good timing! :)

I kind of like the mini-rev in there, it's almost like an easter egg. What if the mini rev was done in a light grey or something so that it stuck out a little more (but was still kinda hidden)?

Swannie, I tried the gray rev, but it didn't look right to me.

Here's the asymmetrical layout:

I'm still liking the symmetrical #6. It preserves a little of the look of the NYM, while still giving us what we want.

I still like #6 best as well. I think it works well with the grey panels. I like the asymmetry in our current kites, but the asymmetrical ones in NYM just look kind of lopsided somehow.

I'm struggling with this panel layout.

I love the stark boldness of the solid color on our current kites, with its asymmetry.

Do we have to have grey panels?
Keep calm, and park it in the pocket

IKE is on Image too!

Probably have to have the gray panels. If we don't, we'll still have vented panels where they are. It also keeps them looking closer to the NYM kite.

Venting is fine. Grey gives you 3 colors on the kite, and that seems too much.

I'm still struggling with the panel arrangement on this model...

Yep, and there's no such thing as a colorless vent, so the vented versions will necessarily appear to have grey in them anyway. And I understand that for marketing reasons the kites have to "look like" the new model. But none of the designs really trip my trigger (sorry, Trigger), which probably means I'm just not an NYM fan. That said, I'm hovering between #5 and #6.

I also like the amount of solid color and the asymmetrical aspect of the current design, but I'm not sure there's a way to make either happen with the NYM layout and still have a design that attractive and "looks like" an NYM.

Just wondered what this might look like, so I made one.

Yeah, that's probably the best so far. My trigger is having the same problem.

It's pretty flat as a line drawing. It looks much better in person.

I'll try and render a 3d model next time for coloring... :jester:

Thanks Swannie, but don't spend too much time on it. We're finally getting our weather back. Full vent tomorrow.
