New 180GO! Team Kites

Postby Mike » Fri, Aug 27 2010, 08:46 AM

So, you clicked on the headline and expected to see a photo of our new kites?
It's not that easy!

180GO! is going to get new kites for the next season but I haven't decided on a design and I'm open to ideas. In fact, I would love some ideas. If you don't do Photoshop, text descriptions are good too.

I'm thinking of changing the color scheme for 180GO! next year. Rather than have 8 different colored kites, I'd like to have just two patterns. Something like 4 red kites and 4 black kites. The two different kites should be clearly different, not a subtle difference.

We'll have a set of standard sails and a set of vented sails. No B-series kites (they have the wrong team name pre-printed on them :P ).

Once the kites are designed, I'll open up another thread for designing the new team t-shirts (hint: they will be red and have both the 180GO! and IKE logos)

Oh, and if anyone would like to sponsor the new team gear, we'll promote your store when we're out and about and I'll put your name and a link to your site up at the top of this web page for a year. Team hugs and kisses are optional and open to negotiation.

Do you have a blank template for the SLE sail layout to play with color arrangements? Or are you thinking of completly new custom sail layouts? I use Paint Shop Pro at work on occasion. Then I could make 3D models and animate them in formations to get a virtual look see.

That sounds cool, I'll look around for a template.
I'm actually thinking of something really plain though. Something like a solid red kite and a solid black kite.
I want it to be obvious to the audience that there is a team of one color kites threading through a team of other colored kites. But I'm open to ideas...

Ok Mike,

You got me with the headline. At least I can help with a template.

I've attached a .gif file with the outline of two kites that can easily be filled in with Paint (in Accessories on Windows machines) or other simple program. The colored version is to illustrate all the triangles and not my proposed color scheme. :-D

Edit: Not sure if file is downloadable from forum. Please let me know if it needs to be submitted differently.

Thanks for the template John, and the art. I like your design, I'll ask Ben this weekend if he'll make a red-centered kite.

Here's an idea someone suggested at the club fly yesterday:

(the leading edge on both kites will probably have to be black--unless we do our own)

Good news is they've already done a red center. Into The Wind has a custom colored mid-vent they sell. I know it is a B-Series, but I would think they would do the regular series as well.

In playing with the template, it pays to keep a copy of the blank one. I've found making multiple color changes may eventually erode the lines between sections causing them to bleed together.

Loosely combining John and Mike's ideas results in this type of design:

If you have to go with the center panel in white, then this might look good:

All good ideas, I'm going to find it hard to choose. Keep 'em coming!

Jeepster's second plan is like what we have now, except more colored panels, and fewer white panels. That looks good to me too. I didn't choose that pattern for the team kite we have now because the bottom part looked like a mustache to me. But I think I'm over that.

Trivia: the original 180GO! team kites included a black & white kite that we never flew and I sold it.

If you don't have a drawing program, that's OK--just describe the design in words. We'll figure it out.

To eliminate the mustache, we can fill in the center. Or maybe it's a Fu Manchu now.

Image

I like the use of alternating colors as I think it will show turns and spins more to the audience than a solid color. I think the eye is drawn to movement and white space.

I like that! The design looks simpler to the eye and has kind of an arrow sort of vibe to it.

I think formations have real possibilities with this pattern.

Here's the two leading contenders in the sky.
I like the boldness of the solid colored kites. I think the striped one is prettier. hmmmm.
Comments? Throw more designs out here, I'm liking this.

I'm also going to add one more kite to the team set. When we fly an odd number of kites, it might look cool to have the center kite be different since it usually does something different than the others, e.g weaving between the kites, spinning in the center.

Another thought:
vented kites are going to look very different that our designs so far.
Maybe the vented kites will need to have a different layout or maybe custom venting.

How about making a stencil and painting the team logo on one of the wings? I could get laser cut stencils made.

I like the stripes pattern, but what about flipping which stripes are red and which are black on each kite. A little subtler difference between even and odd kites, but I think it might look neat. Also, white is harder to spot in the sky a lot of times, so I lean towards keeping it just black and red.
