Experimental Feature: IKE TV

There's been something that I've been wanting to try since getting my new cell phone. It's got the ability to broadcast live video to the internet from anywhere. Naturally, I thought how cool would it be to broadcast the happenings directly from the kite field. People that can't be at an event could have a peek at what's going on as it happens. It was a lot of fun last year at Kite Party when people were watching us on web cams and getting screen captures and posting them over at the Rev forum. This kind of interactivity can be a lot of fun.

So here's what I'd like to try. On January 1, 2010 we'll debut IKE TV. I'll be in Milwaukee freezing my butt off, but hopefully doing a little flying with the other crazy cold-blooded fliers. Maybe some of you sadistic types would enjoy seeing that from the warm comfort of your homes. :P

I'm not totally sure how this will work yet. If you want to watch live, you have to be there during the broadcast. Naturally, that's the most interesting way to watch, but the website does record the video captured, and it can be watched any time after the fact as well.

I intend to do a few short broadcasts from the field, frozen fingers permitting, but unless there is a specific schedule, there needs to be some mechanism to let people know that you're going live. There is one built in feature, the broadcast app will send a message on Twitter when going live with a link to the video. That is pretty handy. If you follow http://twitter.com/ikeclub on Twitter, you will get that notification. If you have notifications set to forward to your phone, you'll get the notice via SMS.

Another way is to post a note on the Facebook page that we're going live shortly. Might catch some people there since there's always someone browsing Facebook.

Posting here on the forum is another way, but that is pretty cumbersome by comparison. It's automatic to use Twitter, easy to post from the phone on Facebook, but not as quick and easy to post on a forum from a phone.

We have a page set up at ustream.tv for IKE. It's at http://www.ustream.tv/channel/ikeclub

From here you can see the live or recorded videos. There is also a chat box, and people watching can type there for others watching to read, and the chat even shows up on my screen on the broadcasting app for further interactivity.

Anyway, that's the plan, we'll see how it works out. Might be a nice feature to show people what goes on at our events. I can broadcast from the events that I go to, naturally, but others with iPhones or Android phones (ahem...Mike, Chris ;) ) could do it too with the USTREAM Broadcast app.

I'll try for something around noon, depending on what's going on.

Live from Milwaukee, it's Friday Afternoon Live!

Sounds great. I can sit in front of the fireplace with laptop and be at the festival!

I'm looking forward to seeing your video. Call my cell if you want live feedback.

You can also type in the chat box and I'll see it right on my phone's screen.

That was fun...we sent up some live video from Milwaukee and San Diego. You can see them at our club's UStream channel page...

I've got a poor internet connection here at my inlaws, so I cant really judge how successful our experiment was.
I can tell the weather was better where I was though :)

For some reason the video I took was broken up into several small pieces. I only filmed twice I think. Perhaps a bad connection on my end?
I was on AT&T and Jeff was on Verizon.

San Diego was a ton of fun and the wind and sun were perfect.

I think it went well. Some of the folks from the Rev forum were watching too. It's sort of choppy looking, but it's pretty good considering the bandwidth it takes to do good video.

I'm sorry I missed out on the fly on Jan 1. I've been really sick - I'm hoping this means I've used up my misfortune for the year.

Glad to hear it went well. I'll put it on my calendar for next year. :-)

Oh yes, being a "Star" is such a drain, but I'll get over it.

Kidding aside, that was a fun day. We stayed over and flew with Steve and Ben (that's right, Ben flew with us) Saturday and Sunday.

I will need to know when and how we can view the next IKE Extravaganza. We will be in the Arizona desert starting next Thursday until February 8th. There should be good cell service there, and we use an air card for internet access when we are on the road.

I'll keep checking back for the information.

Tune in to the IKE TV channel any time during next weekend (well, during the day), and we should have a stream going. There are no specific timing plans at this point. Once we get there and see what's going on, maybe there will be something to plan around.

Jeff, Mike, or others:

Can Ustream send a text message whenever a "show" is live broadcasting? I am now a follower of IKE on Ustream, but it doesn't look like it will notify me.

Maybe there could be an Ike Twitter account just for IKE Ustream and that could be used to notify us when someone is live.

There is...it's detailed in the first post. It Tweets the start of the stream out, and if you have the ikeclub account forwarding to your phone, you'll get it as an SMS message.
